Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Miyamoto on lack of online support in New Super Mario Bros. Wii

Miyamoto knows this game will sell better without online. The game forces you to seek people out to play it with because the multiplayer is better than the single player in my opinion.

People have complained about power ups and deaths pausing the game, couple this with online lag and pixel perfect jumps and the online experience would damage the game.

This is easily one of the best multiplayer experiences this gen. I think NSMB Wii is going to outsell Mario Kart Wii.

NSMB Wii local > MK Wii local > MK Wii online > NSMB Wii singleplayer > MK Wii singleplayer

@Mr. Nice

You bring up a good point. My girlfriend barely plays games at all, she is usually too busy studying for her LPN license, but she still bitched tonight when I picked Mario and she saw that her only other choices were Luigi and two identical toads.

She was hoping for at least Peach or since Peach gets captured give her Daisy. No reason to have two of the same exact character. It screams laziness.

"Well I think it?s more fun if you can see the face of the other people you are playing with"

I'm sorry Miyamoto, but when I play games I tend to look in the way of the TV, not the people I am playing with.

Sorry, but this a lame ass excuse.

What? You never find the time to look at other people's faces while playing video games with them? I even find the time to point my finger at them and tell them how hard they suck.

I am 25 years old and have a child. For one I don't have people over all the time, so I like to go online every once in a while and play with the buddies I can't always have over.

When you're young you think online means nothing, but it means a lot, especially in a game like this for someone my age. That is one of the main reasons why to this day I still play LBP.

Get to my age and have a kid. Let me know how often you have 3 friends over to play video games.

I guess Miyamoto doesn't care about gamers like me though.

BTW, game is still fantastic, but I still think it should have had the ability for me to hook up with friends and/or total strangers.

I am 27 years old (no kids though) and I don't have friends around here often anymore. They became slaves of the mighty booze or their girlfriends. But I still play barely online games, simply because online play can't replicate local multiplayer completely. It's just not the same and actually I feel more lonely when playing online than playing alone.

actually wat u you say about online games true....but when ur playing with ppl u kno and a communication device..its almost like real thing, but overall why does everybodies personal opinion affect the availabilitie of the optiion?

I actually agree with you to an extent. LBP doesn't feel the same when I play with total stranger, but when I play with the many people I've met on this site it is very enjoyable for me.

Wii still allows this to happen, playing with people you know over the net. That is what they put Friend Codes for.

Why release Wii Speak and give us friend codes, then take what is possibly the best Wii release thus far (IMO) and have it lack support for both of these?

@Pyro as Bill

What if you can't have 2-3 friends over all the time though? Just screw us then since it wouldn't help Nintendo make more money right?

Why would online not work? It works for numerous games on PS3 and 360. It works for MKWii, it works for SSBB.

Whether or not you think lag, pausing would be a problem, it still shouldn't be cut out from people like me.

You do know that Nintendo can easily remove the pause feature from NSMBWii when playing online right?

I find it hilarious that people call 2 'identical' toads lazy yet their has been no difference between Mario and Luigi for nearly 30 years except for a colour change (ex Mario 2).

Mario 2 was a poor example. Luigi jumps much higher than Mario in Super Mario Bros. 2.

I don't see how anyone would accept this, even if you personally wouldn't play the online. At least put it in there for those who'd like the option. Not everybody is going to want to use the 4 player functionality either - but it's still there for those who do. Same should be with online - for those who want it, it should be there.

Like others have said, this game screams laziness/rush job in two glaring points - the lack of a 4th non-toad character and online. I really think Nintendo knew that these two drawbacks wouldn't affect sales, but still, show your core fans some respect. I love Miyamoto and Nintendo as much as the next guy, but when they're wrong, you've gotta call them out on it. This would be one of those times, plain and simple.

I agree with you 100% but here the thing about everybodies negative online attitude - if NINTENDO had annouced at E3 that this would have a online experience everybody would of ate up..no questions asked ...I REFUSE to believe that if this option was available .....everybody on VGC wouldn't play with each other...I refuse

Because it is an anti gaming industry decision and that's what made the Wii so popular in the first place. But the main reason is that Nintendo probably didn't have enough time to implement online play, test it and release the game this holiday season. And since third party support can't carry the Wii as we have seen quite clearly this year, Nintendo didn't have much of a choice.

Nintendo has "The most powerful developers", I still find no valid excuse.

I love Nintendo as much as the next guy, but I refuse to excuse them for everything they do.

ex Mario 2 = excluding Mario 2. I exclude it because it's not a 'true' Mario game. True 2D Marios have never had a difference between M and L but for a colour change.

I thought ex: meant example.

Mario and Luigi have different personalities though and fans of the series understand the difference between the two.

The two Toads in NSMBWii just feel out of place.

Anyways, I am gonna go finish up World 1.

Don't think I dislike the game, I actually LOVE it! I would have just loved to have online co-op.
