When you can answer the question below, then you've answered your question.

M$ has a lot of money, why weren't they able to afford Yahoo?

MS didnt buyout yahoo coz jerry yang(former yahoo CEO and founder) was being very very iffy about the share price MS was offering, not coz MS cudnt afford it. MS sweetened the deal but he still wasnt satisfied. And then the recession happend.

MS reportedly wanted to purchase SE at one point in history but that didnt go through.. MS really do need to build their first party line ups though. Nintendo sells primarily based on their first party strengths. SONY too has the edge there. MS need to start working on what they have.. I have no idea why we havent seen a civilisation or a flight sim on the 360, those are very popular franchises... really stupid MS.

Doubt is not a pleasant condition, but certainty is absurd.

Microsoft's share price has been flat since the 90s and Baller's head is on the line right now. It should be obvious that they aren't willing to tolerate further losses from the xbox division at the moment.

Clearly ^ that guy ^ reads the articles on this site about the xbox division prior to posting information pertaining to the xbox division.  Brilliant!

Microsoft have many PC/360 Exclusives locked down (its been well documented that converting a PC game to 360 is literally as easy as pressing a button)............. as well as 360 only exclusives, the PC/360 combo will ensure that Microsoft win the HD war this gen...........

Bank on it.

If there was an urgency to buy companies then they would, but 360 sales this gen have already eclipsed the oriogional xbox so they are defo a gaming force to be reckoned with.

Because:

1) That would cost too much money for too little gain.

2) As RageBot said, 51% of the shareholders need to be willing to sell. If they're willing to sell, stock price is probably going down. If stock prices are going down, you don't want to buy the company.

3) Correct me if I'm wrong, but is that even legal? Wouldn't it be classified as anti-competitive? I mean, if Microsoft isn't even allowed to only include their own BROWSER in THEIR operating system...

Point 3. Agreed.

Even if MS had got yahoo the general thinking is that the EU would have considered it anti-competitive and block it in euroupe.

There's a lot more to it than just "buy" them all. Apart from the fact that it would be absolutely stupid financially for microsoft to buy these studios as has been seen in the past the people who own and work at the said studios would see it as a "take the money and run" hence leading to yet another rapidly declining company (Rare), the laws would be looking into if it is fair and not monopolistic.

Maybe you are thinking of Google's aquisition of Yahoo!, which was blocked on anti-competitive grounds. MS basically de-facto aquired Yahoo! under their 10-year search deal.

would S-E & EA even be willing to reduce their potential userbase to sell games? no

Because buying a company isn't like buying something in the store, if I recall, for a company to be "bought", 51% of the shareholders need to be willing to sell their share of the company, and there are a lot of pepole who won't do that.

Yeah and I think Sony owns 7% of Square enix

Both Sony AND Microsoft have their fingers in other companies just adds to the greed factor in these 2. Just a shame they cant concentrate on themselves more and maybe they wouldnt be fighting for last place!!

Both FIFA and Madden are required by license owners to be released on all available consoles (just like Tiger Woods and many other sports games). MS would have to release them on both Wii and PS3 or lose licenses to other companies. So buying EA for them is useless. And many SE franchises don't really interest western audiences (DQ has never been big outside Japan) and japanese could abandon SE after MS has bought it so I doubt it is worth the price either.
