Forums - Gaming Discussion - People Buying Less, But Playing More (Wii not so much)

I've already said what "active user percent" means. It's in the link I gave before. It's how much time the average user of a console uses it as a percentage of the total time they could use it for.

Heh, so I got those percentages absolutely wrong then =) *went reading*

If the stats are correct, nothing surprising. Wii owners don't play as much. I propose to have any Wii owner's gamer card torn up.

The graphic takes things completely out of context. Since it is not starting at zero, it gives you the impression that the 360 has about five times more active users while it actually doesn't even have double the amount. All consoles are somewhere between 5.8 % and 11.3 %. That doesn't really sound like high numbers, does it?

Also, speaking in absolute numbers, the Wii has about 3.6 M active users according to this statistic, while the PS3 has about 2.3 M and the 360 has about 3.55 M

Looking at it like this, it all seems way more reasonable than reading that fanboyish article that comes along with the graphic. Still, I'm not really sure how good statistics work for this question, and as many others have stated, as long as it isn't specified what "active user" actually means, the whole thing is pretty meaningless.

That's a standard thing to do with graphs, you'll find the same thing on currency charts etc. I agree it's misleading if you're not used to it, but when you're used to the convention the space between the minimum and zero is redundant, thus removed.

I think it is a standard thing when your main goal is to see how something changed over time, just like it is with currency or with stocks. If you want to compare different items however, it shouldn't be done in my opinion. But I agree with you, it is quite common.

@mai: Thanks, I think the points you bring up are correct, so your numbers should be more accurate than mine.

Well, we both got graphs totally wrong =) I wasn't able to find what's the methodology behind those graphs. Internet sites that citing Nielsen usually full of fanboish rant rather than useful info, so I went on explaining those numbers by myself, until Demotruk cleared all issues (see link above).

without defining what "active user" means the graph showing the number of active users is pretty meaningless. horray for statistics, king of the misleadicircus.

"The active user percent tells us how often a person used their console out of the total amount of time the console could have been used during the measurement period."

Thus, it's not about the number of "active users", but how often the console is used per user.

"The active user percent tells us how often a person used their console out of the total amount of
time the console could have been used during the measurement period"

Demotruk -- sorry for not seeing this before. Still, this Nielsen-provided definition is a bit hard-to-follow.

The active user percent tells us how often a person used their console out of the total amount of
time the console could have been used during the measurement period.

This would mean that Xbox 360 users and PS3 users play over 2-1/2 hours per day, every day.

I also wonder if there is not some self-selection bias in those who have People Meters ... but that is a topic for another day.

I believe it's a percentage of their free time, otherwise they would have said "percentage of time" rather than "out of the total amount of time the console could have been used". That would make it more likely to be ~30 minutes or less possibly for the average X360 owner.

I haven't given the methodology a full reading, but I'm sure it can be clarified.

Funny how Kotaku didn't read the definitions section either:

(So of course the report is being used as a reason to trash the Wii).

They certainly could have worded it to be less offensive to the wii.

GOTY Contestants this year: Dead Space 2, Dark Souls, Tales of Graces f. Everything else can suck it.

Yes, by Kotaku's logic 88% of X360 owners play infrequently or not at all, if that were the case the industry would probably be in serious trouble.
