Forums - Gaming Discussion - People Buying Less, But Playing More (Wii not so much)

Alright how did they figure out how much time is used with a certain console by having millions of people that own a gaming console?

Using a statistical sample. The methodology is in the link I gave above.

What this is telling us is that the average X360 owner uses their console twice as much as the average Wii owner. That shouldn't be too surprising.

The only thing I find lacking about the statistics, I'd be interested to know if Wii tends to have more users per household.

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

Well there is always this... but it is outdated.

Also amusingly apparently Women playing the Wii are more hardcore then any other gamer.

That's pretty funny.

Oh they updated it... good.  I suppose in fairness to how much a console is being used you should multiply the US numbers by the ones above.

The strategy is flawed

Ah, was going to think something was seriously wrong if the original Xbox was beating the PS2 in terms of total usage, but it all makes sense after a quick explanation.

If this is a chart of the total amount of time people who could be playing their console are actually doing so, it's not surprising the Wii comes in last. Nor is that a terrible thing. There are lots of people who just play Wii Sports and/or Wii Fit.

What strategy? The "population expansion strategy" as Iwata calls it?

Were you expecting newcomers to gaming to be heavy users very quickly?

No, how they calculated there user activity per console ..(my head is at an ache sorry I cant think)

The has the highest userbase working against it, but like how the PS3 has a higher attach rate. That really doesn't matter too much though.
