Forums - Sony Discussion - PS3 motion control already in devs' hands

LOS ANGELES--When Microsoft unveiled its motion-sensing camera, Project Natal, at its E3 press event on Monday, it made a point of saying software developer kits for the device were being sent out that day. Later, in an interview with GameSpot, Microsoft Game Studios head Phil Spencer revealed the device had been shown to two top developers--Epic Games (Gears of War 2) and Bungie Studios (Halo 3: ODST)--who were experimenting with the technology.

When Sony showed off its own motion-sensing system--based on the PlayStation Eye, light-emitting diodes, and wireless controllers with buttons--it appeared to be at an earlier stage of development. Whereas Microsoft's Lionhead Studios had already created a mood-sensing interactive program called Milo, Sony had a more primitive (but still impressive) tech demo where objects were manipulated and foes slain with virtual weapons.

Now, though, it appears Sony's motion-sensing efforts may be farther along than many think. Speaking with GameSpot, Sony Computer Entertainment America senior vice president of marketing Peter Dille divulged that the technology--first revealed in a US Patent filing last fall--is already in developers' hands.

"We're a little bit past the research phase," he told GameSpot. "We're having conversations with the third-party community. The dev kits have started to go out to the third parties as well. They're working on the tech. They couldn't be more excited about it."

This is good it means it will be availabel for games by the time it gets out.

thats good.

I like SONY's approach more, I don't know hwo your gonna just play games with you being the'll be more on physical ability than skill

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

Maybe this time sony did the right thing by doing it faster and worse
people don't like to wait for something...even if it's supperior

it will be more physical.

I do like Microsofts apporach on the Natal thing. But i just like a controller in my hand rather then swinging my arms around. Maybe ill buy it if its good enough

I called it!

"And 3rd parties are doing with the technology if one of them (as in sony or ms) passed it on"

I am pretty sure we will see Tiger Woods use this tech next year, and I really think that Resistance 3 could end up having this as at least an option. Personally, I still don't get to exited about the idea of motion based gaming. But I am open to it, and would be willing to jump on if something really cool came around. I am tallking a full story driven game with the motion being used without feeling forced. IMO, that is the problem that Wiik has faced to this point. The controls always fell tacked on, and out of place. I think it was a problem with the crappyness of the Wii-mote, but now with Now with the enabler device being released, I have hope for Wii games to stop that, and implement motion that relates to the actions being performed.

Stop hate, let others live the life they were given. Everyone has their problems, and no one should have to feel ashamed for the way they were born. Be proud of who you are, encourage others to be proud of themselves. Learn, research, absorb everything around you. Nothing is meaningless, a purpose is placed on everything no matter how you perceive it. Discover how to love, and share that love with everything that you encounter. Help make existence a beautiful thing.
