Forums - Gaming Discussion - Which type of game do you think ages the fastest?

NBA '98 was released in 1997, before any of those shooters, even 2 years before UT and CS (and I think CS1.6/source are much more recent) Besides, I would not describe CS as one of the shooters with shiny graphics with bad gameplay, so I don't see how that is relevant.

If you're still playing gears 12 years after its release, then it would be the equivalent to my situation

There are plenty of classic shooters that are still amazing. Before the Playstation generation obviously:

Half Life 1 and 2, Counterstrike, Battlefield, Doom, Wolfenstein, Duke Nukem, Unreal Tournament and the original Halo are still amazing to this day.

JRPGs? There are only a few that are classic to anyone other than the genre fanboys - Final Fantasy series, DQ series, Chrono Trigger/Cross... not much else worthy of note.

I can't really answer this question as every genre has classic games that don't age.

FPS ah ha i C alot of u people having it as the fastest i agree its b/c of the lack of gameplay elements like the TPS have

sandbox tps racers and sports to me last pretty long as long as u dont buy the sports game every year it comes out just keep playing the best one for each gen

also fighters seem to me to age fast only wen playing them alone though

I think most sports games don't age well e.g. FIFA, also I don't think early 3D platformers age well either.

I'm actually going to say action games. Things like Assassin's Creed, Resident Evil 5, etc. I think back to the PSOne and N64 and so many of those action games have been made null and void because of advancing technology. The beginnings of 3D were very cruel to action games and I can barely think of anything from that era that still hits as hard as it used to or hits hard at all.

Edit: I thought I'd mention also that I think SHMUPs, both the R-Type and Contra varieties age the least overall. Many of the oldest are still fantastic to play through, the genre has barely advanced at all after all these years and the newest ones are awesome to play for sticking close to conventions made 15-20 years ago. Puzzle games too. A good puzzle game does not age.

But.... but.... HL1 and 2, CS, the Battlefield games, UT, and Halo didn't com before the Playstation generation!

I think the games that age the fastest are probably survival horror games.

The J man believes that shooters(both fps and tps) age faster than any type of game. The J man cant even play any of the last gen shooters. The J man also used to play F.E.A.R to death with its great graphics but after a year couldnt even begin to look at it.

So which type of game do you think ages the fastest?

I would say, up until recently, anything polygon based usually aged badly.  FPS were suspect, along with fighting games and driving games.  Look at the Playstation, PS2 stuff for examples of this.  Well, I do believe Street Fighter 4 should age well.

All things considered, I will go with polygon-based fighting games.

Yearly sports franchise updates

Ok, can go with that.  Anything attempting to model people, while not settling into an artistic style that holds up (going for realism) will generally suffer over time.

Shooters, when they make up for shoddy game-play with graphixs then it ages horribly. Crysis is going to be a game that is going to age terribly

Nobody's perfect. I aint nobody!!!

Killzone 2. its not a fps. it a FIRST PERSON WAR SIMULATOR!!!! ..The true PLAYSTATION 3 launch date and market dominations is SEP 1st

For me it'd have to be racers. I can go back and play through FPS campaigns a second or third time, but games like NFS are usually a once play through and then maybe, just MAYBE i might pull it out again and do a couple of runs.

Thank god they come out with new NFS all the time though, because racers are one of my favorite types of games.
