Forums - Gaming Discussion - What would be the overall result of a stalemate between Wii and PS3 in Japan?

I am asking these questions as a longtime anime and Japanese game fan that currently owns a PS3 and not a Wii that I purchased shortly after the start of this gen as I expected that the PS3 would receive the same type of support in JRPGs ast the PS1 and PS2 had. However as the gen was going along the Wii began to be the bestselling console by a significant amount and much was said on message boards about how all of the best JRPGS of the gen would be coming to Wii instead of PS3. Such discussion was leading me to consider trading in my PS3 towards the purchase of a WII. However as noted above it seems that more recently a stalemate is occurring between Wii and PS3 in Japan. I am interested to know the thoughts of fellow VGChartz members on these issues.

Wait till DQX, MH3, FFXIII, and FFvXIII come out. Then we'll see.

Still 5 mil more wiis and it is easy to develop for. Plus, wii has not really had any big releases there for awhile.

Edit: Also, Arc Rise Fantasia looks good, and Tales of Ten will be awesome. Start expecting some of the smaller devs to move from ps2 to wii.

I don't really see a stalemate happening. The Wii had a good initial push and turned the JRPG developers attention. Now we see a whole bunch of JRPG's announced. When these come out, I think the stalemate will be over.

Well one saving grace of my PS3 is that it is a 60, so it does make my PS1 & 2 games look better.

If the PS3 gains a significant foothold in Japan, it'll bring a lot of niche games to US and EU shores -- namely JRPGs.

Since JRPGs don't require a lot of CPU horsepower, typically (GPU is another story), the PS3 would be like an uber Wii, as far as small Japanese devs were concerned -- a 3.2 GHz CPU plus a 550 MHz GPU with a truckload of memory, compared to the Wii at ~0.75 GHz CPU and ~250 MHz GPU.

Without the SPUs in the picture, the PS3 is no harder than the Wii to develop for, really, except of course for the fancy texture work if you want to use the spiffier GPU's best features.

If there are ever enough PS3s in Japan, you can believe there will be a lot of JRPGs for it -- with the SPUs out of the picture, as I said, the "HD cliff" becomes much less difficult to climb. Many of the PS3's release titles didn't use the SPUs, and their dev time was greatly shortened... which probably also means they were a lot cheaper to make as well.

If you like RPG's, you need a DS.

On consoles, I would take the 360's RPG's over anything.

Vesperia
Lost Odyssey
Eternal Sonata
Blue Dragon
Star Ocean 4

I would put Wii 2nd because it has some decent stuff coming this year. Mostly just Arc Rise Fantashia.

I agree with Riot of Blood. The DS is the RPG system this generation.

Home console would be 360 as of now since it has the most. Soon the Wii will give it a challenge. PS3 has no chance imo. Its too late and its screwed.

Any JRPG fan should own a 360. That is if they hate Wii. Buying a PS3 for only JRPGs (in the last year) is out of pure hate for M$ since it obviously has barely any JRPG going to it. They love playstation and are stubborn dont want to admit that 360 is getting more and will get more in the future.

Why would they pick the ps3? Even if it keeps at the current rate wii still has more systems in japan. Plus, wii has significantly higher numbers in the other two regions. If they are thinking of localizing it makes no sense to pick all the ps3. Lastly, if the rpg games are being announced now (which they are) and are for the wii, why would they split their fanbase?
