I'm admittedly very new to the community here, but I can't believe how cynical some of you guys are in regards to how you think it's impossible for people on these forums to disagree in a civilized manner.

I'm also finding some of these lists very interesting as I agree with half of a person's list and disagree with the other half. It makes me wonder exactly what it is that makes a game fun and enjoyable to a specific person.

Just in the list I've quoted from Vettman I can say that I agree with him about Xenogears and ChronoTrigger yet I love WoW and Timesplitters.

Halo 3 (IMO the first 2 were the only good ones, especially Halo 2)
Half-Life 2 (Dont get the acclamation)
Assassins Creed (WTF)
Soul Calibur 4 (IMO only good SC was the original on the DC)
Guitar Hero (Franchise)

Well I havent been around a long time either but I have seen these types of threads turn very ugly thats all,  because someone is bound to be offended you dont like their favorite game.  But I do agree with you it would be nice if everyone was civilized about it.

And I also find it interesting that I agree with at least halff of everyones list but not all of the games from their list.

1) Call of Duty series: what on earth is so amazing about that game? An average shooter with a repetitive WW2 setting , it copied medal of honor (even though the latest games weren't that good) and i always gotta play the "heroic americans" who save the day. I wanna be the evil guys!!!! I wanna play the japanese and the nazi!!!

2) GTA series: the story in the game isn't that bad. The shooting is terrible and I find extremely boring to go around a city and kill people waiting for the cops to come, sorry but that's not fun for me.

3) Metal Gear Solid series: stealth games aren't my cup of tea. Nothing else, but my friends love them and wanna make me play, but I just don't like them.

4) World of Warcraft: are MMORPG really that interesting? What's so cool about going around without reason killing people for hours and hours? Unoriginal gameplay and absolutely no story...well that's not for me.

5) Guitar Hero: pushing buttons without reason, terrible remakes of many songs, not enough songs!!! I never found a song I'd really like to play, and I like music (even though I'm not an expert). Only the punk-rock hardcore really enjoy it (among my friends of course) but they aren't the casual audience this game was meant for, i guess.

1- Not gonna argue with you there, especially with the last statement.  Though I like it for being able to come home and shoot people up after being frustrated/stressed.  And FPSs do move faster than RPGs and I'm in college right now, so I can't dedicate as much time to games as I'd like.
2- I'd disagree if the controls weren't so confusing.
3- Oh how I couldn't agree more.  Fun to watch (IMO), BORING to play.  Kojima should have become a movie producer after MGS1.  I say this because MGS1 was an important contribution to the gaming world afterall, without this game advanced AI wouldn't be around today.  MGS2 and up should have been movies though.
4- Never played, no opinion.
5- The only one I'd disagree with.  I personally like the soundtracks and they're fun to play at lesat IMO.  But to each is his own taste.

I myself thought MMO's were pointless until I played World of Warcraft. What I discovered and what I love about the game is that your character/toon is an extension of you. It does and says what you want it to. It interacts with other players any way you want it to with limitless possibilities. The combat (at least for pvp) is both simple to learn yet hard to master so casuals can have fun, but hardcores can go that extra mile and become competetive arena players.

I find WoW to be pleasing on the eyes, and the soundtrack is enjoyable too.

Also, the running around and killing everything isn't pointless. Everything you do/kill is done in order to progress your character. The more players you kill in pvp the more honor/arena points u get with which to upgrade your gear and thus the power level of your character. Likewise in PvE, when you kill a monster it drops loot which will with any luck be an upgrade to a piece you're already wearing.

The one downside to WoW and all MMO's is that they're designed to be time sinks. You're rewarded based on how often you are logged in which leads to addiction or at least ruined social lives.
