Unreal Tournament III running at 60FPS

Forums - Sony Discussion - Unreal Tournament III running at 60FPS

I can't wait to buy this game.

question, didnt sony pay epic to develop an Unreal engine designed for cell?
is this game using that engine or the old build?

PS3 graphics near PC graphics is nothing new...PS3 was supposed to be better than PC...

This game would be very weird on a console though...

Yeah, but games like Crysis killed any PS3 game graphically and the PS3 graphics thus far have not lived up to Sony's promises but UT3, GT5 and Killzone 2 look to be positive steps in the right direction in the PS3 fulfilling some of the Sony hype installed into it.

The Keyboard/Mouse support for the game will be interesting as well. Either way, the more news that comes out for this game is nothing but positive. All we need now is for Epic to confirm that this game will allow cross platform play and we will be set, although PC users will PWN the PS3 user base. It will be great to play together.

thats been confirmed...

Yes it has, and my hardcore PC gaming friends are laughing their asses off about it. They can't wait to play console gamers online. One of them actually decided to get the game just for the promise of playing console gamers online. PC gamers are going to be merciless online. A lot of them are really bitter about how much console FPS gaming has taken off, and they see this as an opportunity for revenge.

how is it revenge when PS3 owners can use K&M? they will be completely even if the PS3 owner is using a K&M.

This will eat lots of my time.

PS3 will do graphics better then Crisis, but that will take years to do.

Actually, it's unconfirmed about cross platform play between PS3 and PC for Unreal Tournament III. The news only said that Gamespy was being incorporated into the Unreal Engine 3 for cross-platform play.

Do we know if this is at 720p or 1080p yet? Just curious.

You do realise that by the time the PS3 manages better graphics than Crysis (which you yourself admit will take years to accomplish), the PC has already moved well past Crysis-level hardware.

In other words, in several years time the PC will be creating games that obliterates anything Crysis is able to pull off today. Graphics, textures, physics, AI, sound - everything will be vastly improved.

Where does that leave the PS3, when its hardware five or 10 years down the line is EXACTLY the same as it is now? It's not going to gain a gram of extra processing power. The PC, on the other hand, you can expect a doubling of performance every 18 months for the same money you are spending today.

That's right.

The last thing to keep in mind is that it may not necessarily be "by the time", but rather "if the PS3 can" surpass Crysis at all.

Even if the PS3 could do visuals to Crysis levels today (which it can't - at least, it hasn't been seen yet), it won't be able to keep up. And before you say that UT3 is running at 60 fps, keep in mind PC gamers are used to running UT at well over 150fps (UT2K4 runs around 240fps on my PC at 720p).

Anyhow, follow this link to see what I mean.

This game is going to be huge, 60 FPS and i hope at 1080p it will sell lots. Plus it looks better then anything so far on the console market.

well if the developers are telling the truth, on how motorstorm is only using 30% or something of the cells power, were sure to see big leaps of improvement. and pc games wont improve that fast. not because they cant do it, but because development will cost a lot more, and a lot more people wont be able to play their games because of their hardware requirements. and remember they cant go multiplat that easy if they aim too high. Higher costs lower sales, i dont think that would work out well...

well if the developers are telling the truth, on how motorstorm is only using 30% or something of the cells power, were sure to see big leaps of improvement.

But you should also keep in mind two things about PC development, namely:

  • PC gaming is just entering the 64-bit era.
  • PC gaming is just entering the multi-core era.

What that tells you is PC game developers are also just beginning to come to terms with the extra processing power that 64 bits allows, and are just beginning to understand how to, and to implement, games that actually make use of multicore technology. If developers say that Motorstorm only utilizes 30% of the cell, you could arguably say the same thing about PC gaming. Therefore, you can expect the same leaps and bounds for PC gaming.

You are also forgetting that the development will cost a lot more for the PS3 as well - it doesn't only apply to PC game development. Additionally, an increase in processing power does not mean higher hardware costs. The cost remains the same. Have you ever heard of Machrone's Law? It correlates with Moore's Law. Look it up. It's pretty funny - and accurate!

About multiplat and all that, I honestly have yet to see any numbers that address PC gaming so I'm not even sure if this is really true. Countries like South Korea and Germany, for instance, love PC gaming. I'd love to see them numbers though...
