Forums - Sony Discussion - Something to Ponder... Killzone 2 has a cover system!

I think the Killzone lean and peak system is innovative. I want to feel like I am actually in the war. It seems like their system allows you to stay immersed in the action without stepping out to third person while in cover. Generally, I prefer TPS because of the cover systems. The problem with TPS cover is you can peak around the corner without exposing yourself to the enemy. It seems like the Killzone system is the best of both worlds. I look forward to trying it out. I don't know of any other FPS that uses a system like it.

Thanks for the input, Jeff.

@KtylieDog idk wat it is but a cover system does something for me in terms of gameplay to make it feel  more intense and i think that KZ2 goes against Halo in terms of comparisons as far as gameplay KZ2 is one up it with this cover system

Lack of cover system has always put me off FPSs. It just doesn't feel right being stood out in the open shooting at stuff all the time. Crouching doesn't suffice for me.

I think the lack of the cover system in the multiplayer could be a bad one. Especially when you consider the comment taken your post "Playing games like MGS and Uncharted and other TPS FPS felt dated to me b/c of the lack of a cover system". It's gonna be like two different games in a sense, and it's gonna be quite strange going from single player to multiplayer a suddenly a feature you're used to is taken away. I understand why they've done it, but it's kinda a copout.

Doesn't Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway have a cover system in campaign too? I just don't see the big deal here is all. Sure it's a nice feature, but this is being written like it's somewhat revolutionary. Also if the cover system were actually important to the gameplay, it would have been featured in multiplayer.

I saw nothing in that video that I cannot do in Call of Duty, or R2, or Battlefield, or take you pick of FPS games.

Well, there was the blind fire, wow, like that will get used.

Blind fire with the shotgun made Uncharted on crushing tolerable.

@ox - Brothers in Arms dropped you to a third person view while in cover. The Killzone system keeps you in the first person perspective.

GG pulled the lean and peak cover system from multiplayer because the mechanic did not work well with non-linear gameplay. In multiplayer you are not always moving forward in a level. After testing they felt like crouching was preferred to cover.

So again, the cover system isn't that important if it got dropped for multiplayer. Considering the bulk of play will be there and the opponents likely smarter, it seems to be some decent feature in single player, but ultimately nothing to be writing a thesis over. Also for the cover system to matter at all, AI is going to have to be Gears level or above, which is typically not the level of AI you find in your FPS enemies.

Somehow Gears managed to work a cover system effectively into multiplayer, and it's no longer a linear experience either. It stayed an important feature in multiplayer, because MP was made to be an extension of the experience you get during the campaign. If Guerilla found this cover system to be in any way important, then the MP would have been made to work around the cover system, not attempting to make the cover system work around the multiplayer.

I mentioned in other thread that MOH:H2 for the Wii has this same cover system (I think). So I'm also curious as to what the big commotion is over this.

Okami

To lavish praise upon this title, the assumption of a common plateau between player and game must be made.  I won't open my unworthy mouth.

It is very interesting, but I dont think it is something like gears or uncharted where you will just die all the time without it

This is what I was trying to say all boiled down into one sentence.

Wow, how much hate can you throw at this game?  People always complain that some games bring nothing new to the field and hence will suck, Then this game comes along and is trying something new, and now people say they shouldn't even bother with it.....

I for one think it will be cool, and add a new element to FPS gameplay. I will get it for sure.

I love cover systems. I hope this game turns out good. It's starting to look like KZ2 will be the only game that everyone on my PSN friends list will own.
