Forums - Sony Discussion - Killzone hype/expectations explained.

1/ "Killzone has been pretty much overhyped for no reason. It's coming off 2 really bad reviewed and sold games before. And with only a fake trailer"

==> completely right,
the fact is that sony fan still expect to get a "cinematic game like" with great graphism (the E2006 cinematic), it is why there are still a lot of hype in the PS3 community (with Gorillaz saying "they will shut up the critics") but only in the PS3 community

2/ " showing it has no difference than any other shooter out there really the hype is simply coming from the demand for a worse Halo replica on the PS3. That or simply just for a game in any sense."

==> I don't aggry,
you know even if the first Killzone was expected as an halo killer, today, it is not interesting to compare killzone to halo. NOW, Gear of war and Crysis are more hyped game than Halo3 is (except for the Halo fan). Halo is not anymore the only good FPS on console

3/ My point about innovation in FPS,
You know, about Gear of war, what is really new in this game ?
except the cover system that come from another game (dont know the game sorry), where is innovation ?
there is nothing really new in gear of war !!! just another FPS !!!
and it is the same for all these "news" FPS that are just released with upgraded graphism ...
BUT
why is there so many people saying that Gear of WAr is a great game ???
I think it is just because it is a very immersive game that, without innovating a lot, is perfect in all the point (solid gameplay/graphism/sound/IMMERSION)
that is all ...

and look about another gow : GOD OF WAR
what is new in this fucking game ??
why this game is selling so well ??
It is just a fucking beat them all !!
BUT
the graphism are great, good sound, not bad scenario (at least for the 1), very IMMERSIVE game, after 2 mins you already have fun "killing" (lol) everybody around u with your blades.

These 2 games (and others like Halo1) are CINEMATIC game with very IMMERSIVE 3D world. That is all.

Just see Bioshock, just another FPS, same view thant u can play perfectly with a keyboard and a mouse, like all the FPS since more than 10 years !
BUT,
story seems GREAT, graphism are beautifull, some gameplay innovation (but nothing incredible in my point of view like all the FPS since CS),
AND AMAZING IMMERSION !!!

Indeed, the E3 2006 cinematic show us a similar view, a very reallistic immersive epic world that make us think that the game will be wonderfull

Of course, it is was just pre-calculated cinematic, that cannot be considered as in-game footage, but PS3 fan still hope ...

Wait & see !

Left 4 Dead is innovative as hell.

LEFT4DEAD411.COM
Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

I didnt know Satans dwelling hole was an innovative place.

Sweet and ready to roll!

Little did you know.

I'm not trying to incite any type of massive anti-sony campaign here but just have a question about this game. What does it bring that PS3 that a game like Resistance did not? I'm not trying to knock the game down here or anything but is there something to this game that will make it sell more on the PS3 I know Halo has its past and storyline to draw in all the previous buyers does Killzone have the same thing never played the game? Is it just the graphics that are creating the hype around the game and if this is the case will there be a lack of similar games at the time of its release for gamers to play I mean if there will be I understand it would sell as it would fit into that FPS console player niche but if there won't be wouldn't the more well known franchises sell? Just some questions for those that know haven't really followed this game that much and don't know much about the previous games besides that it isn't on this sites million seller list but some think it should be.

Around the Network

huh, I believe you, but I don't mention it since I dont know it and the game is still not released
I just wanted to show that a lot of game count on "immersion in a epic worl" more than big innovating gameplay ... and sometime it makes very good game (at least good score review and good sales)

I dunno...I don't really care about Killzone...if it ends up looking really good, I'm sure it'll sell some PS3s, but I don't think it's going to be its savior or anything.

All flaming aside.

Agree'd

Killzone was never anything special the first 2 try's. What makes ppl think 3rd time is a lucky charm?

Also, since when has a first party sony game on a console been that good in the first place?

Put aside GT and GoW.

"but a killzone dud would be painfull for a few months."

Especially since, according sony fanboys, it's the second coming of christ.

Blue3, you are one blind fanboy.

you really are a fool.

If killzone is a dud they will get sloughterd by the media, they will take shiet from every one untill some game like Uncharted comes out to silance them.

This is their big FPS, Socom4 and Resistance2 are coming in 08 they really need Killzone to be a hit especially in the US market leading up to xmas 07.

A FPS is not that hard to do, given enough time and resouces a great fps is easy. Thats exactly what gurilla got this time.

they are getting slaughtered by the media anyway, they don't need killzone to be a dud for that.

I don't quite understand your reasoning for calling him a fool, you haven't actually rebutted any of his points. We know Sony need Killzone to be a hit. The problem is, past evidence points to a dud.

He actually rebutted himself. "Name any Sony game that's actually any good... well except those six games" GT1-4, and GoW1&2, not to mention GT5.... Name any huh?

Ok, I'll just name Sony published series instead of each title:

Gran Turismo ~ 44.53 million sold

Crash Bandicoot ~ 30.95

Spyro ~ 12.14

SOCOM ~ 8.65

Ratchet and Clank ~ 5.3

not to mention The Getaway, Jak and Daxter, Syphon Filter, Twisted Metal, Sly Cooper... But putting these aside there are NOT ANY good games published by Sony!

Back to topic, I too have high hopes for Killzone 2, some seem to forget that Sony fans are the ones that will be let down the most if something goes fubar, but I think they'll get it right this time.

I'm not here to say Killzone PS3 will be bad cause Sony could turn the game around and make a great game. But right now we don't know that and all we do know is it had 2 bad games before it in the series. The only thing giving this game anything is the hype around the internet with no causes even behind it. All I'm saying right now is there will be better games on the PS3.

Bad reviewed, really? I enjoyed them and a few others did too...

Deeko
Without a shadow of a doubt, one of the most highly-polished and brag-worthy games that the PSP has.
91
Game Chronicles
Liberation is a perfect example of just how powerful the PSP is, and a great way to experience console action in the palm of your hand.
90
Ferrago
One of the most pleasing things about Killzone Liberation that it seems to have been polished to the point you can almost see your face in it, it's impeccably balanced, looks amazing and is full of little gameplay touches and ideas that only come when a game has been developed by people who truly care about it.
90
Worth Playing
A must-own title that is definitely worth playing. Everything is great, and I really cannot think of anything I would change about what could be this year's greatest hand-held game.
90
PGNx Media
The worst thing that can be said about Killzone: Liberation is that we want more of it. We would have liked a longer single-player experience and we would have liked online multiplayer, but the gameplay in the game is so well done that you would be doing yourself a disservice if you let that stop you from getting the game. Action games do not get much better on the PSP.
90
DarkStation
After the over-hyped console version, the handheld port fortunately delivers with a perfect blend of solid controls and challenging levels.

Official Playstation 2 Magazine UK
A perfectly targeted shooter that sines on handheld due to great controls and balanced gameplay. One of the best blasts on PSP. [Dec 2006, p.96]

IGN
It seems wherever Liberation can go the extra mile, it does. It delivers on all fronts, from a thoroughly engrossing single-player campaign to an addictive multiplayer component. Liberation also shames most other PSP offerings through its presentation.
90
PSW Magazine UK
It's original, atmospheric and challenging, and sets things up nicely for the stunning PS3 game. Let the hype begin again.
90
AceGamez
Visually Liberation is outstanding, keeping the rustic color palette and de-saturated look of the original perfectly while adding even more environmental details.
Killzone for PS2

AceGamez
It's graphically stunning, the sound effects and music immerse you into a tense and exciting atmosphere of total chaos, a strong story compels you through a long single player campaign full of variety and challenge against tough enemies and the fully online multiplayer mode can be played split screen with a bunch of bots for those without a network adapter.

PSM Magazine
Killzone was worth the wait, and matches the hype. It hits the mark in so many ways, it's baffling; they promised us we'd experience fugture war, and we have...and come away shaking. [Holiday 2004, p.70]
92
Gaming Illustrated
Offers up some of the best graphics on the PS2 to date, and certainly is the most entertaining FPS game we've played on the console ever.
91
Next Level Gaming
OK, let me put it plain and simple to you. Killzone is the best Playstation 2 FPS to date. Forget about all those other wannabe shooters and watered down Xbox-to-Playstation 2 ports, this game is it.
90
Official Playstation 2 Magazine UK
Visually amazing FPS that'll rock your game world every time. [Jan 2007, p.106]
89
XGP Gaming
The environments are for the most part, spectacular. War debris is everywhere, worn out tanks lay forgotten amongst the destroyed buildings. All of it does relate for one hell of a war feel and setting.
88
Games Radar UK (Pre-2006)
A gorgeous, big, weighty, important event-game that makes good on most of its grandiose promises. Easily in the top two first-person shooters for PS2 alongside "TimeSplitters 2." [PSM2]
85
Stuff
Even though it offers the best online play Sony has to offer, it still comes up a few frags shy of toppling Master Chief, mostly because our poor PS2 seemed to be struggling to run the game.
84
TotalGames.net
While the frame rate occasionally dips and pop-up hasn't been totally eradicated Killzone looks stunning. However, Killzone's total focus on fire fights means that anyone that doesn't relish the thought of scrapping for every inch of territory, yearning for puzzles, switches, vehicles to pilot or woe-betide, aliens, should look elsewhere.
Stop hating, especially if you've never even played either game.

Gameplay as a whole is woefully unbalanced, leading to death after death for no good reason. Each time, you will question your desire to persevere; it's a losing battle.

A 40????? That does not seem impressing to me at all. But I haven't played the game so I can't rate it myself. It was just that you put only favourable reviews there.

The scaling part doesn't bother me so much, but the assigning a score part does and I would really like to know which ones were assigned a score based on general text impressions.

As for Killzone, I've never understood why people got so worked up over it.  It's an over all meh franchise with the PS2 game being shitty and the PSP gaming being not bad but not good as well.  As someone else said, what is this game going to bring to the PS3 that other games already haven't?
