Forums - Sales Discussion - is metal gear solid 4 undertracked

Does VG chartz track bundled copies of the game like with wii sports? I would imagine it being hard to do,seeing as not every PS3 sold is bundled; only some 40 gigs in Europe and others and 80 gigs in the US.Also, how about those gunmetal PS3's,they were bundled as well with copies of MGS4.

Since Vgchartz has overtracked software sales consistently verse NPD top 10 for at least the last couple months it's very likely that current numbers are actually too high.

Trying to compare sold to retailers vs. sold through to consumers is especially bad with AAA titles since stores typically well overstock highly anticipated items. Look at Halo 3, MS shipped an ungodly number of units at launch and we know a lot of those were still sitting there next week.

no i dont think it is undertracked, for big games they ship alot early

Actually I think it may be slightly undertracked too (for reasons I'll get into later), but it is essential to realize that the 3 million is a shipped figure, and VGChartz reports sold to consumers figures. Let me say that more simply.

Konami has announced that they have sold 3 million copies of the game to retailers (Amazon, Wal Mart, GAME, etc).
VGChartz has stated that those retailers have sold ~2 million of those copies to customers like you.

That's a lot of stock in the channel, though. Just from a purely shoot-from-the-hip standpoint, having 1 million copies in channel ("in the channel" is a term used to describe a game that retailers have purchased but they haven't sold to consumers yet) is a lot for a game that has thus far sold 2 million copies. It's not impossible, of course, but it's a lot.

We'll see, though.

Well, not to long ago Take Two announced having shipped 11 million copies of GTA IV while selling 8.5 million copies to consumers at the end of May. If GTA IV can have 2.5 million copies in the retail channels after 5 weeks on the market I don't see why MGS can't have 1 million copies in the retail channel after 2 weeks.

tell me then how's having 1M copies sitting on the shelves after 4 full months (clue: Halo 3...jan 8th MS announced 8M copies sold...while we at vg chartz had 7M). If we accepetd it why should we question now?

to me the weird thing is JUST 3M copies shipped...i expected at least 1M more.

I don't know where people are getting the idea that 1 million copies sitting on shelves is too much.

If anything, I'd say it's too little. There have been several calculations showing that hardware sitting on shelves is around 1 million (usually a bit less). It's not surprising at all to have games at the same or higher level.

Also, notice that it's not just copies sitting on shelves. There are also copies at warehouses and in shipment (i.e. sitting on ships or trucks).

koffieboon - spectrum - the games you listed are 2 (Halo) - 4 (GTA) times bigger than MGS4... Can't you give an example of a game with the same calibur that applys to this situation?

and spectrum nice try with the " i though they would have shipped more" cheap shot.

Next week it will sell less than 200k if it stays at that rate 6 weeks worth of stock is a lot. I assume it will drop to 100k the next week and that would be 10 weeks worth of stock....

Halo 3 after 4 month was selling like 60k copies per week...less than MGS after 2 weeks...and supposedly this situation will go on for at least 4-5 weeks. By then the channell will be completely wiped out of the 1st shipment.

as for the shipped copies i still think that 3M isn't such a big number for the most hyped game Ps3 had so far...ok, it's hardcore...but it's not more hardcore than, let's say, GeOW (that was a new franchise AND could count on an installed base that was half of ps3). Still a major hit (as any game that sells 1M+ copies) but I expected more.
