I think you're confusing AA (Anti Aliasing) with double-A grade...or I don't know...you got wires crossed somewhere...

I see Kwaad is up to his old tricks. Can the Wii do Anti Aliasing? Of course it can. The N64 was the first console to have a GPU capable of Anti Aliasing. In fact, I find it odd that a Sony troll would bring up AA at all. The PS2 didn't have AA built into its GPU. So despite being a newer architecture than both the N64 and Dreamcast, it had a serious problem with Anti Aliasing. Both the Gamecube and X-box are quite capable of AA. Since the Wii is an extention of the GC's architecture its ability to perform AA is greater than that of the GC itself. Sony , on the other hand, seems to have an issue with AA yet again. The PS3's gpu is based on the GeForce 7800. I know what you are thinking, yes the RSX is capable of FSAA. Thats Full Screen Anti Aliasing BTW. The problem is the Nvidia GPU family its based on cannot render HDR and FSAA at the same time. So developers have to choose between one or the other. The 360 on the other hand is capable of easily peforming both at the same time.



There is a trick... somehow done in software. It isnt AA. But I think it gives a better effect than AA. And well... in all honesty... if your bothered by jaggies @ 720p on your TV. get a life. I dont care about AA. Know why? It uses more power than it's worth. But from everything I've seen on the Wii. it could use a SERIOUS dose of 2xAA Quick list of the top of my head. FarCry. (it's a joke of a game, but the jaggies are freakin horrible) RedSteel. (I thought it was a ok game, but the jaggies gave me migranes... first time that ever happend to me... probibally the last to) Zelda. (I'm sorry. It had some problems with jaggies) MP3. (I'm sorry. Everything I have seen is jaggy. Do I usually gripe about jaggies? no. I only turn AA on on my computer... when well... I know for a fact I am CPU limited and 8xAA wont drop my framerate. Have I ever complained about jaggies on a computer game at 1280x1024. No. Does oblivion have jaggies on my 1080p HDTV... (running at 1080p). no. (I have HDR on too btw) Infact... no true 3D games have jaggies on my TV from my computer... I dont need to waste the power on AA. HOWEVER... I have played games like Deus Ex on my computer... and back then I didnt have a 8800GTS. And I ran the game at 640x480. And well... it didnt have jaggies either. And I was so impressed by how good it looked, I actually turned the graphics down to 320x240. (seriously) and the UI didnt fit on the screen, and was defunkt. HOWEVER... the game STILL didnt have jaggy lines. And I'll admit. Resistance dosent use either the nifty shader... or AA. But I have to stand 6 inches from my screen. to be annoyed by the jaggies. and that hurts my neck. My question is. Does the Wii have enough power to run a more... modern game, with AA. How powerful is the graphics card in it? how much more powerful is the CPU? How much power does a Wiimote use on the CPU? Most of my questions could easily be answered with an SDK. But I'm not paying nintendo thousands and thousands of dollars to answer a few questions. Is is capable of AA. Duh. Is is capable of AA. And a image though? From what I have seen the answer is simple. No. My question to all you nintendo fanboys... with all your nintendo knowledge. Is to Tell me how great your F*king console is. That's all I want to hear. I dont want to hear how I'm a troll. I dont want to hear how you dont care. Also. Does anyone know what the shader that is used that gives a almost identical end result to AA is called? Darc Requiem - Well turn that HDR on that Wii baby. HDR Rocks your socks... even at SD resolution! Also, the 360 has about 20% of it's GPUs silicone DEDICATED to AA. So if you have a game on the 360 With AA turned off. Whoever made that game was stupid.

Haha. Avatar burned. Yeah, Wii games could use some AA, but maybe it takes up too much power on the Wii. For the most part, though, it isn't the biggest graphical problem. Right now, developers like Ubisoft need to simply have better design, art direction, something...anything but a FarCry-like effort...disgusting. If they actually TRIED, AA would not be as big of an issue...it certainly isn't to most Wii fans. EDIT: Oh, and Zelda had jaggies because it's a GC GAME. I notice the jaggies on the games...but I don't care. I do care on PC games though. It really makes the game look and feel smoother, and the more AA or whatever filters they can reasonably put in a Wii game, the better. I'm just not gonna whine about it...cause it doesn't bother me.

Perhaps you're thinking about interpolation? That could be done in software as well, it's basically just averaging adjacent pixels over the entire screen. Both AA and interpolation reduce the effective resolution to display information by using extra pixels however. A number of televisions with higher resolutions can do this in hardware, which is better than doing it in software at a given resolution - you don't waste the console's power or its pixels, and end up with a smoother image. The only game on your list I've played was Zelda, along with Rayman:RR, Wii Sports, Wario Ware: Smooth Moves, Metal Slug Anthology, and Excite Truck. I haven't seen any noticeable aliasing in these games - of course my television is not HD, and is only 32". You might be better served with hardware interpolation, many televisions will do this in an upscaling phase. If they don't, you could probably get a hardware upscaling device to interpolate the signal at the higher resolution. Without interpolation, you can get a horrible mass of aliasing all over the place since the display's pixels do not map 1 to 1 with the resolution of the input. Generally the difference with games you play at 640x480 on a computer vs. ones you play on a television is the size of the screen. If a larger screen is sharp enough yet doesn't provide interpolation, you'll see more jaggies simply because they are magnified. If this bugs you (I know the original PS1's aliasing bugged me, used to 800x600 as I was with my PC at the time) you probably want an image upscaler that does at least bilinear interpolation. Any time you see a line on a bitmapped display with square or rectangular pixels that is not perfectly horizontal or vertical, you will have aliasing. There's no way to avoid this with a sharp display, anti-aliasing only hides it. Higher resolutions make the aliasing less visible, but it still exists. The Wii certainly does have enough power to do anti-aliasing. The GPU is about 1.6 times faster than the Gamecube's, and the CPU is about twice the clock rate. The system also has over twice the RAM. If the developers feel their game looks good enough, they may not apply it. If they get enough people complaining, they'll work it into their game engine. If you want to see anti-aliasing or interpolation, the best you can do is petition your favorite game developers (forums are probably the worst place to ask, too little signal to noise) to add it to their engines as at least an option. For the moment, they seem to be focusing more on using the remote functionality effectively in their games. Finding out whether anti-aliasing would perform well on the Wii with a modern engine would require implementing one on the system and determining if its average and worst case performance would suffice with it enabled - that would take quite a bit of work. As for the remote itself, it doesn't use too much CPU power. Most of the power is used in processing the 1bpp image from the infrared camera for pointing purposes, but 1bpp images are about as lightweight as you can get. Drawing the pointer in software would be more intensive. As for shaders - an antialiasing shader would be an antialiasing shader. Just as an interpolation or sharpening shader would be named after what it does. It's just a bit of code that runs on the GPU, examining the pixel's input and producing an output color. I suppose my question would be, why do you want to hear how great the Wii is? It's a game console, and you apparently have one. I enjoy the games I have for it, and look forward to a number of games coming in the future. It also seems to be selling quite well, I'm personally attempting to help a few friends pick one up after they've played some of the games at my place and it's not an easy task. I'll be happy to answer your technical questions, but it's not my job (nor that of the others here) to change your mind about the console.

That makes me curious, starfox adventures and Final fantasydidn't seem do suffer from jaggies on the GC (at least on SD TV's) The GC can do AA right?

If you're talking antialiasing, then it makes no sense. Wii is tailored for SD, meaning video. You just won't even notice the jaggies even if there are some, unless the game is really poor in visual content. You won't even notice them in Wii Sports. Now, "digital" displays like LCD (and most HDTV) have big problems with SD content/video format. That's because they're too sharp for these resolutions, and don't even have the same kind of pixels (more or less rectangular). Usually, the quality of SD content is poorer on a HD screen. I have a 52" SDTV, and never notice any of these jaggies, but I sure can see them right away on any HDTV. Even on Zelda:TP, I can clearly see it doesn't look good on a LCD, it looks far better on my set. The Wii games will be tailored for SD, so don't expect them to look good on your HDTV without a good scaler inbetween. That's also why they have to put the Wii screens through some transform before posting on Internet, as most people will look at them through monitors, which are far sharper than a TV. So basically, AA isn't needed right now. When devs master the console, then it will be time to try to fo trick for this problem which will mainly affect HDTV, aka a small base of Wii owners IMHO.

One. Find that picture somewhere else on the net. Or another picture of that character. That character was designed from the ground up by me. (drawn by a pro tho). Second. I have 2 LCD HDTVs. So your saying I now *HAVE* to go out and buy a 500$ bigscreen peice of **** to make it look good? ROFL. Nintendo can shoot themselfs in the head if that's true. I'll look at my bros Wii on his TV.
