Its a peripheal already making it a loser. Peripheals dont sale hardware. The hardware package and software sale units.

So Dance Dance Revolution pads, Guitar Hero guitars, and Singstar mics never sold?

The DDR pads and GH guitars were custom tailored to the games, and as far as I know they were never used in any other type of game.  I do not know about the mics.  This controller(from what I can see) will be meant to be an all-around type of controller and be able to play many games.  In this way they are very different.  We cannot tell wether or not this new controller will sell by using the DDR pads and GH guitars as a reference.

Stuff like this always ends up being garbage. It is tacked on. Sony has the SIXAXIS and will support that. They have no need to do anything to help these people and they are not inclined to. Waste of money. It will probably get supported by one game, like the Powerglove and ROB the robot. Oh I almost forgot my favorite. Segas MENACER. Yeah that was totaly rockin for the Terminator 2 movie tie in...................then nothing. All of it, junk.

My feeling is that those who want a "professional" gaming experience will not be happy with this controller. Those who are happy with a motion sening controller will be happy with the graphics of the Wii.

Yep, the big problem is application. Can anyone name any peripheral that has had a major impact on any system's gameplay mid stream -- say, 1 or 2 years into the console's lifespan?

Depends what you consider a peripheral, I guess. The original Dual Shock on the PS1 wasn't added for a few years after launch, and it caught on big time.

Agree.

This just goes to show that in this day and age, nintendo is the shepherd and everyone else follows them like sheep and can't be assed to come up with a new idea. These people will pay the price for it by having it fail terribly.

1) Adopted by MS and Sony, it would look desperate and sad, and simply validate everything Nintendo's been doing.

2) As a 3rd party, or late in console life, add on, it would not be seen as
standard equipment. Developers wouldn't make games for it, or at least not devoted to it (which is what you really need), and so gamers wouldn't bother buying it.

3) By the time it is released, the Wii will be retailing for $9.95. So who needs it?

 1) It is not a company of MS or Sony it is not their choice...What can those two say against it?

"We don't want it?"

 2) They will make games for it (the company itself) and probably third party games like Rayman Rabbits 2 will be playable with it. It will be good for developpers like Ubisofts RR2 who probably sell more games with it.

3) I don't know when it will release :s.

1)The point I was trying to make is that MS or Sony won't adopt it as a standard device - ie a new pack in controller. If they did, they would take a huge PR hit.

2) How many games can they make for it? And how fast? And how good could they be? By the time such a controller was ready for market with a handful of games we'd be into 2008 at least. 3rd parties wouldn't develop for it (unless offered a bundle of cash upfront, which I doubt the developer has, and question whether MS or Sony would be willing) until they saw enough of them sold to justify a title. That would make it very hard for the peripheral to become a must-have, unless it was, somehow, backwards compatable with existing games.

whats up with the picture... looks like a mouse 2 me.

I personally dont believe it will do 2 well, as not many games will come out for it. why would developers make a game for a controller that is owned by maybe 2-3% of the market when they can make a game that can be utilised by 100% of it?

I said the same thing about the Wii. But look now!

Yep, the big problem is application. Can anyone name any peripheral that has had a major impact on any system's gameplay mid stream -- say, 1 or 2 years into the console's lifespan? I can't. I can name some peripherals that become nice little add ons for afficianados of the few games that used them, such as the Guitar for Guitar Hero or the Camera for EyeToy games, but nothing that actually made it into even 5 percent of the system's games.

Of course, the fact that it's never happened in history doesn't mean it's impossible, it just means it's very unlikely. Let's just repeat this for emphasis: no mid-life peripheral has ever been adopted by more than 10 percent of a console's user base, and no mid-life peripheral has ever been adopted by more than 5 percent of the consoles games (probably much less -- I'm just choosing 5 percent to be safe without doing serious research to find the actual percentages).

Three words: Dual Analog Controller. It wasn't third party, but was introduced 2 years after the PlayStation's release. The DualShock, of course, followed 2 years later. How someone hasn't mentioned this is beyond me. I remember not being able to play some games because I didn't yet own the controller.

I have often thought that Sony or Microsoft could introduce their own baton like controller for their respective systems with the DualShock as the perfect example for success.

Edit: Just notice Borkachev had mentioned the DualShock.  My apologies.
