I always purchase 2 new spare controllers at the beginning of a console launch for backups in case the one that comes with the system fails.  Lately I've mainly been gaming on the Series X.  The controller that came with with didn't last a year.  I always had one sticky button that I could never get to work properly and then it developed stick drift and I had a lot of play in the left joystick.

I retired that controller and kept it stored in case I needed spare parts.  The second controller I unboxed was a blue one that I purchased a silicone wrap for to help provide comfort for my hands.  I've been using it for 3 1/2 years till this morning.   I woke up and looked across my room and noticed I still have 4 brand new, still boxed, Series X controllers.  I opened up the 20th Anniversary edition and noticed how springy and clicky the joysticks and buttons were.  I compared it to the one I've been using for the last 3 1/2 years and realized how much wear the one I've been using had.

Started the day's gaming session with Borderlands 3 and can instantly tell the difference.  How long have I been gaming at a disadvantage?  How could I go so long without realizing it was time for a new controller?  I even had the A button needing to be pressed harder or sometimes twice to get it to respond, and I guess I had just adapted without even noticing.

I also didn't see the point in storing in the old controllers anymore for parts, when I have plenty of new controllers still boxed, so I chunked them (it was still hard to let go).

Around the Network

I’ve stuck with my TotK joy cons since May 2023, and before that, I had cycled through three Power A GCN controllers from 2018. I’ve only ever owned two PS5 controllers (one for me, one for my bro). I’ve used the same Wiimote since 2017. I’ve used the same GCN controllers since I was a child. Same with DC, N64, SNES, NES…yeah idk i don’t have any issues with my controllers lol. And I can get pretty aggressive with them.

In general, I only buy a new controller if I needed an additional one or for additional features (mainly turbo button on 8/16bit consoles). The one exception to this was when one of my joycons stopped working correctly, probably due to water intrusion (it got wet when hiking and falling into a riverbed). Thankfully only one joycon was affected in the end and the console just fine, but since they sold as a set I got two new ones anyway.

I have...

-3 Dualsense controllers (Black and White for my PS5 and Cosmic Purple for my PC)
-2 Dualshock 4s (Blue and Red) - will replace these with a PC specific controller and a second Switch 2 Pro controller in the future
-2 Xbox Series controllers (Black and Lunar Shift for my Xbox)
-2 Switch Pro Controllers (Red and Blue)

I get two controllers for each platform except for PC, so that way I can have one charging while I play with the other one.

If one breaks, I'll replace it.

I have 9 controllers now with a stand that takes 10 - traded in my Series S controller (White) when I traded in my Series S. So my Switch 2 Pro controller will replace that spot soon.

For this generation I had the initial JoyCon pair given with the console. Lasted one year n half before I went and bought a Pro Controller for docked usage only.
6/7 years later and I'm still using it just fine ...

Except for a drift that just happened to show its rear last weekend so I'm honestly glad I'll get to finally replace it next week !

Btb, I'm kinda bummed that I didn't jump on the Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Pro controller edition. Prolly one of the best design they had for one of those
