Forums - Sales Discussion - Do you think Mario Kart 8 will surpass Wii Sports in sales?

Can Mario Kart 8 sales Surpass Wii Sports sales?

Yes, but only if you coun... 12 60.00%

Yes, even if you count just Switch 4 20.00%

Wii Sports, the best selling Nintendo game (excluding re-releases, VC releases, NSO, etc.), has sold 82.90 million copies. The second best selling game is Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on the Switch, with 67.35 million sold as of December 31, 2024. Gained over 3m during the holidays. Including the Wii U version, total Mario Kart 8 sales are 75.81 million.

Do you think Mario Kart 8 has enough gas in the tank to surpass Wii Sports? If you do believe it, do you think it can only be done by counting both the Wii U & Switch versions, or do you think the Switch version can do it on its own?

I personally believe Mario Kart 8 can do it if you combine both versions. Without that, I think it falls short by several million. I see MK 8 DX ending around 75 million, so the 8.46m from the Wii U version would be just enough to take it over the top. Of course it's possible that MK8 DX sells a little bit more than 75m, but I still don't see it reaching 82.90m, especially since the next Mario Kart is likely going to be a launch title for their next system (and that is likely to be in just a few short months). It could still sell after that launch due to backwards compatibility, but obviously Nintendo would want to push their new system and new Mario Kart.

Switch and Wii U combined, yes. Though a bit unfair to compare 2 against 1.

Switch only, maybe, but probably not with MK9 likely coming this year.

Agree. Two gens against one. Unfair.

Yes, when you include the Wii U version.
I only see Deluxe alone surpassing Wii Sports if Nintendo Selects return and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is priced $20-$30.

Lifetime Sales Predictions

Switch: 161 million (was 73 million, then 96 million, then 113 million, then 125 million, then 144 million, then 151 million, then 156 million)

PS5: 115 million (was 105 million) Xbox Series S/X: 40 million (was 60 million, then 67 million, then 57 million. then 48 million)

PS4: 120 mil (was 100 then 130 million, then 122 million) Xbox One: 51 mil (was 50 then 55 mil)

3DS: 75.5 mil (was 73, then 77 million)

Switch and WiiU 100%. 7,1 million for 82,91 million is a given. Switch alone i am not sure. 15.54 million more MK8DX for 82,91 million? It depends. It could leg it out. But for now i say 75 million max. Anyway i would not be surprised if it made it, Nintendo Software legs are the best in gaming hostory and they where often surprising...

MK8 sales are heavily tied to hardware sales and Switch hardware sales will drop a lot this year. If MK9 wasn't coming then people picking up a Switch 2 may have got a copy too but as it stands. The combination of Switch 1 hardware declining and Switch 2 getting it's own Mario Kart means MK8 sales are going to start dropping pretty fast.

Despite this I think it will probably still do it anyway. MK8 sales will start dropping a lot, particularly this holiday season but I don't think by enough to stop it reaching that goal.

Decent chance if you count both gens of MK8. MK8D only though not even close. MK9 will be out soon and new Switch 1 sales will plummet. Everyone is going to be getting MK9.

MK8D will easily pass 70m, but it isn't coming close to 80m, let alone 82m.

It has potential to touch 75m though honestly I think that's probably unlikely, but if it did it would put the combined MK8 sales just over Wii Sports. Not sure how well MK8D will sell come summer once MK9 and a new system are out, and I would expect a massive YoY drop for it next holiday season. This past quarter was MK8D's final quarter to sell a bunch (which it totally did!).
