Nintendo Switch hardware shipments compared to some other high selling platforms (millions of units)

Time for the regional breakdowns for Q3 and the FY so far.

Q3 YoY change

Japan- 1.56m > 1.19m (-24%)
Americas- 2.82m > 1.71m (-39%)
Europe- 1.99m> 1.48m (-26%)
Others- .53m> .43m (-19%)
Total- 6.90m> 4.82m (-30%)

Q1-3 YoY change

Japan- 3.74m > 2.81m (-25%)
Americas- 4.85m> 3.30m (-32%)
Europe- 3.56m> 2.51m (-29%)
Others- 1.59m> .92m (-42%)
Total- 13.74m> 9.54m (-31%)

After a strong Q2, with shipments being even or up in Americas and Euorpe, Q3 is the opposite with a collapse in shipments. Nintendo as expected has lowered the forecast once again. Without a unique holiday game or even a Q4 game, shipments will continue to fall. If -31% holds for next year as well then by December 2025, we could only expect 6.5m shipments. That combined with the 1.5m left for Q4, means the Switch could be at 159m by December 2025. However most people would expect a fall much harsher than this year due to the arrival of the Switch 2 and lack of software made specifically for the Switch.

I'm surprised Mario Party Superstars and SM3DW + Bowser's Fury still haven't shipped a million in the past three quarters, hopefully they can get there by next quarter so we can get updates.

Without a unique holiday game or even a Q4 game, shipments will continue to fall. If -31% holds for next year as well then by December 2026, we could only expect 6.5m shipments. That combined with the 1.5m left for Q4, means the Switch could be at 159m by December 2026. However most people would expect a fall much harsher than this year due to the arrival of the Switch 2 and lack of software made specifically for the Switch.

Americas took a big hit this past quarter, a 1.11m decline in that region alone. They are waiting for Switch 2, it's going to have a massive launch in the U.S perhaps even record breaking (1 million plus launch week).

Happy 150 Million to the Switch. I remember vividly thinking after the smartphone and Wii U era that the days of a console ever reaching 150 Million again were over. Always felt like the PS2 was just the perfect storm of events that led it to selling that much that could never be replicated again. The PS2 released at the perfect time where competition was weak, Xbox was first starting out and not competitive yet and most people didn't take the GameCube seriously as a platform to get 3rd party games, making PS2 the only legit option at the time. There wasn't smartphones to steal the casual gamers away from the PS2. PS2 also worked as a relatively cheap DVD player which also may helped it stand out to sell even more. The PS2 also benefitted from the disaster launch of the PS3 since the price was much cheaper and Sony supporting it more in it's later years to recoup the losses from the PS3. I felt like it was impossible for a console in this day and age with strong competition now to ever get close to the PS2's success, but the Switch has proven me wrong, and I'm happy to know that the console business is still thriving more than ever and that we haven't transitioned into smartphone gaming like many were expecting.

At its current pace, it should be able to outsell the DS by this summer, officially making it the bestselling Nintendo console of all time. Only a few months away.

In terms of outselling the PS2 I think it's gonna end really close, really could go either way and heavily depends on how much Nintendo is willing to support the Switch 1 even after the Switch 2. My minimum sales forecast right now tho is 157 Million, there is 0 chance the Switch ends below that number. So I think even in a worst case scenario Switch will end within 3 Million away from PS2. I think if it were to outsell the PS2 it won't be til a bit of a while, probably by the end of 2026 it would happen, so a little less than 2 years.

As expected Switch past the 150 million barrier and its even closer to 151 million actually. For a system about to enter its 9th (!) year, sales are quite good. Switch will finish this FY with 11- 12 million. For the coming FY I still expect a 4- 6 million year, for 2026/27 1 million minimum. I am shortly before revising my original minimum of 155 million to 157 million.

I think the Switch will be capable to surpass the PS2, BUT Switch need a price cut, for example: U$ 179.99 for Switch Lite bundle (like the Animal Crossing version), U$ 249.99 for Switch Standard Bundle (like Mario Kart 8 bundle) and U$ 299.99 for Switch Oled bundle (maybe Tears of the Kingdom?).

PS: If Switch surpass the PS2 Sony will come to public and will say that PS2 sold 165M :P

SteamMyAnimeList and Twitter - PSN: Gustavo_Valim - Switch FC: 6390-8693-0129 (=^・ω・^=)

1.5m drop in forecast, but 11m for the FY is still a great result. 152.32m shipped by March 31st 2025.

Next report is going to be the interesting one. How many Switch 2's they are planning on producing & shipping and how fast they wind down Switch 1 production will both be revealed.
