We had 2005, 2010, 2015, 2020 and now 2025 as the speaks of gaming but what would you rate the 9th gen years so far?

This is obviously very subjective and based entirely on what your purchased but all this sort of stuff is highly subjective. Feels free to add as much objectivity as you see fit. Also, feel free to add in cross gen games but make a note that you are. Top rated years of 9th gen, not counting cross gen or Switch...

2020 - 2/10

2021 - 4/10

2022 - 5/10 (Elden Ring really taking a lot a weight here)

2023 - 9/10

2024 - 9/10

Prediction for 2025 - 10/10

2023 was great, I haven't seen a year like that since 2015 nut it just doesn't match 2015's solid 10/10. 2024 held up pretty damn well and all, some of the best games of last year were complete surprises like Stellar Blade. I think 2025, should the games stay on schedule, will be the 8th gens 2015 moment but just a smidge later than expected.

I'll exclude Switch from the years like you said, but that will hurt the ratings of the years.
2020 - 7/10
This was mostly an eight-generation year, given the holiday season releases of the new consoles. As far as cross-gen games launching and next-gen games, it was not incredible but some solid stuff. Unfortunately, almost everything was cross-gen. Miles Morales and Astro's Playroom were the best.
2021 - 6/10
Pretty quiet in terms of anything I cared about. The two main highlights were PS5 enhanced versions of Ghost of Tsushima and Final Fantasy VII Remake. This was not a reassuring first full calendar year for the new consoles.
2022 - 8/10
Horizon: Forbidden West, Midnight Suns, Skywalker Saga, and a definitive campaign version of The Last of Us.
2023 - 8/10
Spider-Man 2 is the highlight. I like Jedi Survivor as well. Still not an excellent year on the 9th gen side.
2024 - 9/10
FF7 Rebirth, Persona 3 Reload, Astro's Playroom, what a banger year. I almost give it a 10. Despite some cross-gen games still around, this feels like the first full year of the 9th generation.
2025 will probably be a 9/10.

Lifetime Sales Predictions

Switch: 161 million (was 73 million, then 96 million, then 113 million, then 125 million, then 144 million, then 151 million, then 156 million)

PS5: 115 million (was 105 million) Xbox Series S/X: 40 million (was 60 million, then 67 million, then 57 million. then 48 million)

PS4: 120 mil (was 100 then 130 million, then 122 million) Xbox One: 51 mil (was 50 then 55 mil)

3DS: 75.5 mil (was 73, then 77 million)

2020: 0/10. Nothing notable for me.
2021: 6/10. - Metroid Dread, Halo, Ratchet and Clank.
2022: 6/10. - Xenoblade 3, Horizon, Elden Ring.
2023: 8/10. - Diablo 4, Tears of the Kingdom, Baldurs Gate 3.
2024: 6/10 - Indiana Jones, Dragon Age, Legend of Zelda: Echos of Wisdom.
2025: ??/10 - Metroid Prime 4, Fable, Outer Worlds 2.

If I were to exclude Switch, every year would be a 2/10.

As somebody who plays almost exclusively Nintendo, I’ll comment on NSW since November 2020. Age of Calamity was a strong start, followed by Metroid Dread…though 2021 was a bit dormant other than that. KirbyATFL, Pokémon Legends Arceus + ScVi, Splatoon 3, and Xenoblade 3 during 2022 were all strong (tho i haven’t played any of them…just heard good things). 2023 is unmatched. 2024 was fantastic…for a ‘twilight year’. All in all, I’d say a solid 7/10, though I expect this to bump up to 8 or 9 once NSW2 is out.

What exactly is a 10 year for ya? Can ya think of any or close to it? '98?

So 2023 was also great for NSW, I think 2023, 2024 and 2025 (as it looks) are products of the pandemic and things would have been spread out more but I think all signs point to 2025 as being the GOAT, NSW2 or not.

Nice, people will say 2024 isn't as good as 2023 but I feel like ratings mine again cause you're right, 2024 does seem to be better or at least equally as good.

Oh and buy the way, I suppose switch would have to be in there cause it's spent more time in the true 9th gen now that outside of it. So scratch that rule.

Switch is such a confusing platform in that regard. The hardware generations have been flawed for a while, and some changes or retcons previous things. ColecoVision and Atari 5200 would've probably started a generation if it wasn't for the crash, so they're a lost generation in a way between the 2nd and 3rd though they are considered 2nd.

I consider Switch 9th since it succeeded 3DS (eight-gen) and Wii U (also eighth gen). If nothing else, it's more on the 3DS side. Switch Lite and Switch as a whole is a big step up from even New 3DS. I imagine Wikipedia is probably going to call Switch 2 ninth generation once it launches since they have Switch as eighth generation. To me, Switch 2 is 10th Generation even though it's coming to market about 2-3 years before PS6 and a year or more before Xbox 5.

I don't think we can remove Switch from the equation. Nintendo is the world biggest publisher, and the one that releases the most games by far, anyways this is how I rate the year

2020: 9/10. This was a meh year for Switch, Nintendo had their "mid life slump" as all their games which started development before Switch launch were already released (except Animal Crossing which was delayed to 2020, probably to not make the year so barren). It was amazing for all other platforms though. Many great games, Final Fantasy, The Last of US 2, Half Light, Microsoft Flight Simulator, Ghost of Tsushima, Crash 4, Ori, Demon Souls, Spider Man Mile Morales and even some interesting games nobody was expecting like Fall Guys and Hades

2021: 5/10. This was a quiet year. Very few games of note, Nintendo still haven't recovered from their mid life slump, and other publishers were buzy recovering from pandemic. There were some gay of note though, Returnal, Ratchet & Clank, Deathloop, Meteoid, RE Village, Forza Horizon, Tales of Arise and Monster Hunter, but ultimately nothing we can say "this is a generation defining game"

2022: 8/10. This was a better year, many high profile games from Sony here like Horizon, God of War and Gran Turismo, and Nintendo did well too with Xenoblade and Splatoon 3. Elden Ring is a genre defining game and very iconic. We also had Sifu and Stray, great indie games

2023: 9/10. Overall nice year for Sony (Spider Man 2) and Nintendo (Zelda, Mario Wonder) bangers, but third parties released their own bangers. Resident Evil 4 RE, Final Fantasy XVI, Alan Wake 2, Street Fighter and Diablo... and of course the game changer Baldurs Gate 3. Even Microsoft released something with Hi-fi Rush and Starfield

2024: 6/10. Boring year from Sony, and terrible year from Nintendo. Third parties released some good games like Metaphor and Final Fantasy Rebirth. Overall it was not a good year though, nothing really memorable outside Astrobot, even the good games don't really scream to have staying power in the industry

2025: I think it will be a 7/10 year. Nintendo Switch 2 will launch and probably will have some bangers. Sony is releasing Ghost of Yotei and must have something saved to second half of the year. And of course GTA VI is not out of cards. Other publishers are probably not releasing in fear of GTA VI overshadowing their games lol

The video game industry hit it's peak in 1995 with the release of the masterpiece Chrono Trigger. Everything since is fighting for 2nd place.
