PS5 vs PS4 Sales Comparison in Japan - December 2024

This monthly series compares the aligned Japanese sales of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.

The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020 in Japan, while the PlayStation 4 launched in February 2014. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup.

PS5 Vs. PS4 Japan:

December 2024 is the 50th month the PlayStation 5 has been available for. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 5 when compared to the aligned launch of the PlayStation 4 by 0.05 million units.

In the last 12 months, the PS4 has outsold the PS5 by 0.47 million units. The PS5 is currently behind the PS4 by 0.26 million units.

The 50th month for the PS5 in Japan is December 2024, while for the PS4 it is March 2018. The PS5 has sold 6.47 million units, while the PS4 sold 6.73 million units during the same timeframe.

The PS4 crossed 7 million in month 53, 8 million in month 61, and 9 million in month 72. The PS4 has sold 9.68 million units to date. The PS5 is currently 3.21 million units behind the lifetime sales of the PS4 in Japan.

Xbox Series X|S vs Xbox 360 Sales Comparison in Japan - December 2024

This monthly series compares the aligned sales of the Xbox Series X|S and Xbox 360 in Japan, as well as looking at lifetime original Xbox sales and Xbox One sales.

The Xbox Series X|S launched in Japan in November 2020, while the Xbox 360 launched in Japan in December 2005. The original Xbox launched in Japan in February 2002 and the Xbox One in September 2014.

December 2024 is the 50th month the Xbox Series X|S has been available for in Japan. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the Xbox 360 when compared to the aligned launch of the Xbox Series X|S by 9,134 units.

In the last 12 months, the Xbox 360 has outsold the Xbox Series X|S by 0.21 million units. The Xbox 360 is currently ahead by 0.59 million units.

The Xbox Series X|S has sold 0.66 million units in 50 months, while the Xbox 360 sold 1.25 million units. Month 50 for the Xbox Series X|S is December 2024 and for the Xbox 360 is January 2010.

The Xbox 360 crossed 1.3 million units in month 54 and 1.5 million units in month 67. The Xbox 360 sold 1.66 million units lifetime. The Xbox Series X|S is 1.00 million units behind lifetime Xbox 360 sales.

In the last 12 months, the PS5 has outsold the PS4 by 0.43 million units. The PS5 is currently ahead of the PS4 by 1.51 million units.

The PS5 has sold 24.54 million units in 50 months, while the PS4 sold 23.04 million units. Month 50 for the PS5 is December 2024 and for the PS4 is December 2017.

The PS4 crossed 25 million in month 57 and 30 million in month 71. The PS4 has sold 34.93 million units to date in the US. The PS5 is 10.39 million units behind lifetime PS4 sales in the US.

This monthly series compares the aligned US sales of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S both launched in November 2020. The Xbox Series X|S launched in the US on November 10, 2020, and the PlayStation 5 on November 12, 2020.

In the last 12 months, the PlayStation 5 has outsold Xbox Series X|S by 3.12 million units. The PlayStation 5 is currently ahead by 8.13 million units.

The PlayStation 5 has sold 24.54 million units in the US in 50 months, while the Xbox Series X|S sold 16.41 million units. The PlayStation 5 has a 59.9 percent marketshare (+2.1% year-over-year), compared to 40.1 percent for the Xbox Series X|S (-2.1% year-over-year).

Switch vs DS Sales Comparison in the US - December 2024

This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo DS.

The DS launched in November 2004 in the US, while the Nintendo Switch launched in the US in March 2017. Therefore, the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup, which is why there are big increases and decreases.

Switch Vs. DS US:

Gap change over last 12 months: 693,081 - Switch

DS Total Sales: 52,044,251

December 2024 is the 94th month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for. During the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the Switch by 0.69 million units when compared to the DS during the same timeframe.

In the last 12 months, the Switch has outsold the DS by 0.69 million units. The DS is ahead of the Switch by 4.59 million units.

The 94th month on sale for the Nintendo Switch is December 2024, while for the DS it is August 2012. The Switch has sold 47.46 million units, while the DS sold 52.04 million units during the same timeframe.

The Nintendo DS sold 53.80 million units lifetime. The Nintendo Switch is currently 6.34 million units behind the lifetime sales of the DS.

In the last 12 months, the Xbox One has outsold the Xbox Series X|S by 1.24 million units. The Xbox Series X|S is currently behind the Xbox One by 1.89 million units.

The Xbox Series X|S has sold 8.28 million units in 50 months, while the Xbox One sold 10.17 million units. Month 50 for the Xbox Series X|S is December 2024 and for the Xbox One is December 2017.

December 2024 is the 50th month the PlayStation 5 has been available for. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 5 when compared to the aligned launch of the Nintendo Switch by 1.84 million units.

In the last 12 months, the Switch has outsold the PS5 by 9.47 million units. The PS5 is behind the Switch by 13.49 million units.

The PlayStation 5 has sold 71.03 million units in 50 months, while the Nintendo Switch sold 84.52 million units. Month 50 for the PlayStation 5 is December 2024 and for the Nintendo Switch it is April 2021.

The Nintendo Switch crossed 90 million in month 55, 100 million in month 58, and 110 million in month 65. The Nintendo Switch has sold 148.79 million units to date. The PS5 is 77.76 million units behind lifetime Switch sales.

watching that last graph.... I think its clear PS5 is not going to reach Switch numbers.
