Forums - Sony Discussion - New PS5 model officially announced

Original vs New design?

New 18 30.00%

Where is the PS6? 15 25.00%

So Sony just officially announced the new PS5 models that will become the standard PS5 skus from now on.

Apparently price stays the same (edit: people pointed out the digital version is actually more expensive), so even as its a bit smaller and lighter than the actual models, I dunno if it can be really considered the PS5 Slim, which I think are still to come, together with a Pro model.

Here is the link for the announcement:

If the bulk of the size of the original model was because if the can to keep the noise down, will the slim one being 30% smaller make it alot louder as a result?

It definitely can be considered a slim model.

They actually made it smaller in addition to adding the removable disk drive.

Also note that the price of this Digital model is actually higher at $449.99. $50 higher than the original Digital model. I guess they are charging you for the ability to add the drive down the line.

I'm happy with my original model but this is a good revision, 3 years after launch.

My take, I think this will be the 'slim' for the remainder of the gen. By next holiday year the price of this slim will be even lower to compete with the Switch 2 and XBX slim. Also the pro will be released next holiday at around this current price (if Sony does decide to release a pro version).

....But we shall see, I know I'm content with this model and will definitely be picking this up (with the disc drive add-on of course).

My initial thoughts are really, meh. PS5 Digital is more expensive btw. So $449, plus $29 for vertical stand, and $79 for disc drive. So you may as well just get the regular PS5.

PlayStation's inflated ego is on display once again. Slim models are supposed to be cheaper than standard models, not the same (or more in the case of the previous Digital vs the Slim Digital). Also, it seems like a bad business practice to announce this a mere month in advance. This should've been announced between June-September.
I'm so glad I didn't get a PS5 in 2023, because I would feel extra salty right now.

Lifetime Sales Predictions

Switch: 151 million (was 73, then 96, then 113 million, then 125 million, then 144 million)

PS5: 115 million (was 105 million) Xbox Series S/X: 67 million (was 60 million)

PS4: 120 mil (was 100 then 130 million, then 122 million) Xbox One: 51 mil (was 50 then 55 mil)

3DS: 75.5 mil (was 73, then 77 million)

It isn't meant to Wow you. Sony literally released a 20 second video and didn't even call it Playstation 5 slim (still called simply Playstation 5). It is simply replacing the current model. Only differences are-

1. It comes with 1TB SSD.

2.Detachable disk drive.

By the way there is a Horizontal stand that comes with the PS5.

So that nobody will buy a PS5 starting from June as people will wait for the slim? Sales would drastically drop if this was announced way ahead of time.

Sidenote: I'm surprised Sony didnt try to make a Spiderman bundle with this instead. Either push the spiderman date back or the slim date forward to align with each other. As wells.

I never thought I'd say this, but this actually makes me appreciate the current model more. The fact that it's smaller is nice but the split in the casing makes it look even worse overall. Also, I will say the current model is a very high-quality, well made machine that runs quiet, whereas this looks "cheaper" in that regard, but that's only an assumption on my part. And, if I'm correct, the BD model is the same $499 price (which is already disappointing)... but the digital model is $449!? With the separate drive at $79.99!? That's crazy.  EDIT: Oh, ok, didn't notice the drive size is bigger, so there's that at least.

If this is going to replace the current model completely some time soon then that's unfortunate for me, who has no intention of getting the console any time in the near future. I don't want to have this model or a pro-model be my only options if Sony does decide to make Uncharted 5 eventually.

Not exactly something worth mentioning tbh. Idk why stands are even required in the first place and now they're being charged for. Sony created the solution to a problem that didn't need solving to begin with.

I wasn't expecting to be wowed. Just.....interesting design and business choices that were made.
