Forums - Sony Discussion - Playstation's worst year when it comes to 1st party output.

No one can deny that this year has been a great year for gamers, with plenty of multiplatform releases to keep people occupied. This has certainly helped Sony to go under the radar with their 1st-party output, which has not been on par with their previous years. I mean, if they don't announce nothing else for the end of the year (which I highly doubt they will) they will end 2023 with only 2 AAA 1st party games released (one of which being available day one on the rival console's subscription service, ironically) and 2 VR games which, as you know, are not available to anyone who hasn't paid a few hundred dollars extra for the periferic.

I remember last year we had a very popular thread here were it was heavily disscussed how 2022 was Xbox's worse year for many people, so I got curious to see what people think about Sony's output this year. To my eyes, this has been the worst year for the playstation platform when it comes to 1st party output, but what do you guys think? Has there been any other year that was worse to you?

Spider-man 2 is coming out this year. I don't care.

You are bound to love Earthbound.

Yes it is.

I don't know. Wasn't the first year for PS3 pretty bad? I honestly can't remember, but it seems like it was. Sales would suggest so.

It depends on the person I guess. The PS2's launch year was pretty bad and so was the PS3's for me. It's kinda funny looking back cause I think the first exclusives I really loved for those two were MGS2 and MGS4, respectively.

Kinda offtopic but are there any exciting first party exclusives coming to the PS5 (aside from Spider-man)? I guess I'm out of the loop cause outside of Spider-Man 2 there isn't anything that comes to mind to be excited about as a PS5 fan and that kinda sucks lol

I don't think discussing "off" years in Playstation content is necessary a console war discussion unless it turns into one. Xbox has had this discussion plenty of times lol. I do see this year as a bit dry on the 1st party content, but I don't know if it's the worst. I'm sure there's been worse, but idk. At least if playstation is going to have it's "worst" year, this isn't a bad one to do it in. I'm not a playstation guy, but I've seen this go down the console war path too much to care so maybe keep it civil for this one.

Off the top of my head so far is just Marvel’s Wolverine. Also maybe The Last of Us Factions? Which I also assume TLoU2 remake would be in the works now too.

This is the 3rd year since 2019 where I notice a good number of people calling a Sony year "their worst ever". The other 2 being 2019 and 2021 (in which they ranked 2nd on Metacritic. A useless metric but some people love it).

It's below average yes, but I'm sure you can find worse years in Sony's 30 years in the console business. Curiously, 2020 and 2022 are often touted as their best years. Spikes!

The pattern will break as I have a feeling 2024 will be even worse. At least 2023 had GT7 VR, a Horizon expansion, and Spider-Man 2. 2024 looks bleak in terms of Sony developed (not published) titles, but hopefully it's a case of Sony no longer announcing games many years in advance and we will be getting a surprise or two.

Oh that's right. We haven't heard anything about that Wolverine game in like forever right? But I would definitely be interested in that one. Thanks for the heads up.

2014. It might technically have had more 1st party games but none that I care about or which were nearly as big a deal as Spider-Man 2. Same can be said for 2019.

And if we're willing to go further back than one generation we can definitely find some even worse years, 2006 for example.
