Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Classic Paper Mario has returned, as a remake.

Nintendo has thrown players a bone and we have a remake of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door in 2024. I expected a port or remaster, so this is extra special. I hope they also remake the first Paper Mario, and I wouldn't mind a port of Super Paper Mario.

Could we finally get a third game in the style of the first two Paper Mario games? Maybe, but that's probably going to take until 2029 or later.

Personally I thought Origami was the best paper mario to date. Amazing boss fights.

I'm so excited. I hated Sticker Star and Color Splash and haven't beat Origami King because I thought just like the two that came before it, the battle system was awful. Hopefully they make a Paper Mario remake and remaster Super Paper Mario as well.

I hope they remake the original one. The best one. Glad this is getting a remake tho.

What boss exactly was your favorite? The hole punch? The bunch of rubber bands? The box of coloring pencils? The pair of scissors?

The game is ok, but the boss fights were pretty bad.

Velumentals were fun.  I enjoyed the humor and loved the battle system.  Very creative.  Better than standard turn base I played across dozens of other games.  Different is good.

Well if you like that the battles dont matter, then sure. I prefer getting XP from battles to level up, so I have a reason to do them.

Paper Mario did seem like the best candidate for a remake.

-It has the worst graphics.

-It's the first one.

-It has the best critic reviews, though TTYD has the slightly better user reviews.

-There are gameplay things that could be tweaked: A post-game, audience during battles, partners having HP.

If TTYD sells on par with or above Nintendo's expectations, a remake of Paper Mario seems very likely.

To each their own.  Grinding is the worst thing in gaming.

Nintendo has said that they shifted Paper Mario away from traditional RPG because Mario and Luigi filled that niche. With Alpha Dream out of business it seems less likely there will be another Mario and Luigi game, which is just as well, because while I love that franchise it was running out of steam anyway. That seems to indicate that Nintendo would be likely to return to classic style Paper Mario.

I would say that this remakes is a good sign that they will be getting back to that, and maybe they are doing this as a prelude to a sequel on Switch 2... the only thing is that they're also remaking Mario RPG. So... maybe they would be more likely to use that as the RPG branch and keep Paper as a more spinoffy title? Personally, I like the Paper Mario RPGs better, but the Mario RPG series is probably more marketable, and you can still make Oragami King style Paper games.

I think Oragami King was really underrated. Genuinely made me laugh many times, and the battles were fun. But, I like the RPG gameplay better. I like games with a sense of progression and there's not much of this here. Also not really much strategy involved the battles. It's basically a puzzle game masquerading as an RPG. Which isn't necessarily bad, but I'd rather have an RPG.
