Switch vs DS Sales Comparison in Japan - July 2023

This monthly series compares the aligned Japanese sales of the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo DS.

The DS launched in December 2004 in Japan and the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. Therefore, the normal holiday periods and the Japanese Golden Week holiday for the two consoles do not lineup.

July 2023 is the 77th month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for in Japan. During the latest month, the Switch has outsold the DS by 240,910 units when you align the launches.

In the last 12 months, the Switch has outsold the DS by 2.17 million units. The DS is currently ahead of the Switch by 2.56 million units.

The 77th month for the Switch is July 2023, while for the DS it is April 2011. The Switch has sold 30.12 million units, while the DS sold 32.68 million units during the same timeframe. The DS sold current Switch sales in month 65.

The DS has sold 32.99 million units lifetime in Japan. The Switch is currently 2.87 million units behind the lifetime sales of the DS.

PS5 vs PS4 Sales Comparison in Japan - July 2023

This monthly series compares the aligned Japanese sales of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.

The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020 in Japan, while the PlayStation 4 launched in February 2014. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup.

July 2023 is the 33rd month the PlayStation 5 has been available for. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 5 when compared to the aligned launch of the PlayStation 4 by 45,126 units.

In the last 12 months, the PS5 has outsold the PS4 by 671,121 units. The PS5 is currently ahead by 580,245 units.

The 33rd month for the PS5 in Japan is July 2023, while for the PS4 it is October 2016. The PS5 has sold 4.05 million units, while the PS4 sold 3.47 million units during the same timeframe. The PS4 sold current PS5 sales in month 35.

The PS4 crossed 4 million in Japan in month 35, 5 million in month 41, and 6 million in month 47. The PS4 has sold 9.64 million units to date. The PS5 is currently 5.59 million units behind the lifetime sales of the PS4 in Japan.

Xbox Series X|S vs Xbox 360 Sales Comparison in Japan - July 2023

This monthly series compares the aligned sales of the Xbox Series X|S and Xbox 360 in Japan, as well as looking at lifetime original Xbox sales and Xbox One sales.

The Xbox Series X|S launched in Japan in November 2020, while the Xbox 360 launched in Japan in December 2005. The original Xbox launched in Japan in February 2002 and the Xbox One in September 2014.

July 2023 is the 33rd month the Xbox Series X|S has been available for in Japan. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the Xbox 360 when compared to the aligned launch of the Xbox Series X|S by 34,202 units.

In the last 12 months, the Xbox 360 has outsold the Xbox Series X|S by 55,775 units. The Xbox 360 is currently ahead by 205,240 units.

The Xbox Series X|S has sold 478,810 units in 33 months, while the Xbox 360 sold 684,050 units. Month 33 for the Xbox Series X|S is July 2023 and for the Xbox 360 is August 2008.

The Xbox 360 crossed one million units in month 40 and 1.5 million units in month 67. The Xbox 360 sold 1.66 million units lifetime. The Xbox Series X|S is 1.18 million units behind lifetime Xbox 360 sales.

This monthly series compares the aligned Europe sales of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.

The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020, while the PlayStation 4 launched in November 2013. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do lineup.

PS5 Vs. PS4 Europe:

July 2023 is the 33rd month the PlayStation 5 has been available for. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 5 when compared to the aligned launch of the PlayStation 4 by 172,201 units.

In the last 12 months, the PS4 has outsold the PS5 by 1.76 million units. The PS5 is currently behind the PS4 by 4.93 million units.

The PS5 has sold 12.58 million units in 33 months, while the PS4 sold 17.51 million units. Month 32 for the PS5 is July 2023 and for the PS4 is July 2016.

The PS4 crossed 20 million units sold in Europe in month 37, 30 million in month 51, and 40 million in month 72. The PS4 has sold 45.85 million units to date in Europe. The PS5 is 33.27 million units behind lifetime PS4 sales in Europe.

In the last 12 months, the Switch has outsold the Wii by 3.70 million units. The Switch is currently ahead of the Wii by 536,855 units.

The 77th month for the Nintendo Switch is July 2023 and for the Wii it is April 2013. The Switch has sold 32.87 million units, while the Wii sold 32.33 million units during the same timeframe. The Wii sold current Switch sales in month 90.

The Wii sold 33.12 million units in Europe during its lifetime. The Switch needs to sell another 0.25 million units to outsell the Wii in Europe.

The Wii launched in November 2006, while the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. Therefore, the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup, which is why there are big increases and decreases.

July 2023 is the 77th month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for in the US. During the latest month, the Wii has outsold the Switch by 168,601 units.

In the last 12 months, the Switch has outsold the Wii by 3.95 million units. The Switch is currently ahead of the Wii by 0.82 million units.

The 77th month for the Nintendo Switch is July 2023 and for the Wii it is March 2013. The Switch has sold 41.77 million units, while the Wii sold 40.95 million units during the same timeframe.

This month the Nintendo Switch outsold lifetime sales of the Nintendo Wii in the US. The Switch's 41.77 million units sold is above the 41.70 million the Wii has sold lifetime in the US.

Well, it was a long chase, with Switch over 7 million behind at one point, but ultimately the Switch's longer legs have won out.

The Wii was a phenomenal success in the United States, even more so than in other regions, but it's grandchild has taken the best of its innovation and blue ocean appeal and strengthened it with a broader array of third party support and a more consistent cadence of first party heavy hitters.

Only DS, PS2, and Xbox 360 remain ahead in America now, and the third is due to be topped very soon.

This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the PlayStation 5 and Switch.

The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020, while the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup.

In the last 12 months, the Switch has outsold the PS5 by 0.61 million units. The PS5 is behind the Switch by 1.16 million units.

The PlayStation 5 has sold 40.83 million units in 33 months, while the Nintendo Switch sold 41.99 million units. Month 33 for the PlayStation 5 is July 2023 and for the Nintendo Switch it is November 2019.

The Nintendo Switch crossed 50 million in month 35, 60 million in month 41, and 70 million in month 45. The Nintendo Switch has sold 128.48 million units through July 2023. The PS5 is 87.65 million units behind lifetime Switch sales.

In the last 12 months, the Xbox 360 has outsold the Nintendo Switch by 1.81 million units. The Switch is currently ahead of the Xbox 360 by 7.69 million units.
