Very respectable numbers. They may not be able to compete with Nintendo on Switch, but then again, who can?

Also, they don't need to, and it's great that Sony has franchises that are so good and it's games are selling so well.

Agreed.

Nintendo First party has always been strong, since the 90's. Now with the Switch, they are essentially in the league of their own.

That's not case with Sony First party. They were never big sellers until late PS3 gen. Outisde of Gran turismo, not a single 1st party game sold over 10 million.

PS4 Gen was when they started to sell significantly better than prior generations.

They are good sellers, but they need to invest more in other kind of games. At this point I feel like their first party as cannibalizing themselves because many of them sells to the same pool of gamers

There are exceptions of course, like Gran Turismo, but they need FPS, platformers, fighting games, RPGs, etc

Not only strong sellers but damn good games as well.

Speaking of RPGs, I'd argue Sony needs to tone down those RPG elements in their first-party titles. It's becoming too formulaic at this point, like skill trees.

Also, they kind of have FF already, so yeah.

Yeah this has been a sentiment I've shared as well but has been taken as me accusing Sony of all their games being the same

Even FFXVI was very Sony-like in its design and barely qualifies as an RPG and almost seemed to try to compete with the rebooted God of War. Although I still am really looking forward to the title, it would be great if Sony spread their creative wings to many differing genres.

FPS does seem to be covered here soon for Sony with their GaaS titles like Concord, and I want to say Fairgame$ is an FPS but I may be wrong on that.

The exceptions that have been released have been really good. Astro's Playroom was a fantastic platformer, Ratchet & Clank was a return for the franchise, and even had their toes dipped into Roguelikes with Returnal.

I really hope Sony continues down this path. Because even their open world games are getting stale taking way too many cues from Ubisoft's open world design. With way better storytelling than Ubisoft's tbf lol.

I feel like sales numbers are becoming less and less important as MS and now Sony have sub services where you can play these games. Also most of those huge sellers for PlayStation were massive bunduruu on PS4.

Nothing competes with Nintendo though.

Don't forget Uncharted 3 (9.3 million), Detroit: Become Human (8 million), and Gran Turismo 6 (5.22 million).

Love and tolerate.
