Forums - Gaming Discussion - Let's Discuss! Top 10 gaming franchise of all time

Give me a detailed reason if you think I'm wrong, or if you think other franchises deserves it more! I want to discuss and debate.

1. Mario

2. Pokemon

3. Call of Duty (CoD)

4. Grand Theft Auto (GTA)

5. Minecraft

6. League of Legends (LoL)

7. PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG)

8. Zelda

9. Fortnite

10. Tetris

Based on IP power

- Influence to the industry
- Popularity
- Continuity
- Revenue
- Impact Worldwide
- Diversity
- Status Quo

Completely based off of impact from games alone. So it doesn't include franchises that comes from other media such as Dragon Ball. Yes Dragon Ball has many video game adaptation and amongst them one of the top grossing mobile game of all time with the likes of Dokkan, but it isn't a "game" franchise. This is also why Pokemon isn't No.1

Examples of reasons why some franchises wouldn't make it to Top 10
1. Space Invaders (Huge revenue, Huge impact, BUT poor continuity/current state)
2. Dungeon Fighter Online (Considered the highest grossing single game of all time, BUT poor impact outside of a single region, insignificant to the industry)
3. Fifa (Great consistency, High revenue, High popularity, BUT not a game franchise)

Honorable Mention:
Sonic, Final Fantasy, Mii/Wii, Candy Crush, Clash of Clan, Street Fighter, Pacman, Doom, Halo, Sims, Roblox, Warcraft, Smash Bros, CS:GO, Valorant, Elder Scrolls, Animal Crossing, Need for Speed, Resident Evil, Monster Hunter, Red Dead, Souls, Assassin's Creed.

Any objections?

Yeah, that's a pretty bad list. Some of those are literally just a single game, not really franchises. When talking about top movie franchises nobody is going to mention Titanic, are they? Talk about biggest movies and it obviously comes up, but it's not a franchise.

Plus not having FIFA seems crazy. It's one of the top selling games every single year and it's a massive part of pop-culture. I'm guessing you're American or something so don't realise how big it is?

To play devil's advocate here, gaming is a bit different, because with the live service aspect, many games will see quite a lot of change and expansion over the years to continue keeping consumer interest for long periods of time. Fortnite is only one game. But it's probably the most played game on the planet most days of the year. There is no movie equivalent to that.

Mario and Pokémon are in the right positions. I prefer not to guess the other ones

I said gaming franchise. I didn't consider Fifa as a gaming franchise same goes with other sports games similar to it and franchises from other media like Lego, Spiderman, etc.

Franchise - the right or license granted to an individual or group to market a company's goods or services in a particular territory

Idk maybe the word "franchise" wasn't the right term, but you get the point. Should I change it to Intellectual property?

I like most of your list, but there's one franchise I would never put in my top 10.

Tetris (Gameboy) was maybe the first game I ever played along with Marble Madness, but also one of the worst games of all time. It's not even an average game, but a terrible game and so overrated. I played several versions and none do anything to make it interesting. It's one of those nostalgia games that doesn't hold up in any way, but people like because it's a "classic" although I think it was never good. Even as far as puzzle games go, it's just way too simple and boring. Tetris Effect's high metacritic score is mind boggling. There's countless games I think are overrated and don't care for, but it's like comparing not liking Magic the Gathering to not liking Tic Tac Toe.

Understandable, that's why it's at 10.

However, Tetris is technically the best selling single game above Minecraft just from mobile. It had more than 450m downloads before going free, although it was like $1.99 each. Minecraft also includes mobile purchases so it is fair. Tetris also left a huge impact to the industry while maintaining a decent status.
Simple yet complex at high level, a game anyone can enjoy. Just like Rubiks cube, it has a strong following with a pretty intense competition. It is still played by many people today and could be considered the best puzzles in history.
The minus for tetris is revenue, by far the worst in the top 10.
Hate it or love it, we can't deny it's one of the most prominent game franchise in history.

I didn't forget, but those are 'honorable mention' at best. Definitely not top 10. If I kept adding franchises to the honorable mentions, it would be endless.

People love Tetris because they find it fun. I've played the Gameboy version on NSO, various modes in Tetris 99, Tetris Effect and Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 and it's always fun to me. Put in like 200 hours into these different Tetris games and Switch alone.

The Gameboy at it's launch was heavily carried by Tetris. It was huge as fuck. It sold over 30mil copies on the GB and another 7mil+ on NES.

It's not even that simple. A lot of strategy goes into it the faster it goes. That's what makes it exciting. It's not just considered a classic because of nostalgia (I never had any nostalgia for any of it, having only played it for the first time in 2019), it was considered a classic right from the get go in the 80s. It's literally considered to be timeless by many.
