Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony raises price of PS5 (Good?)

So if you guys haven't noticed yet, apparently Sony decided to raise their price for the PS5 in most regions. A lot of views on this are negative and I think many can agree that this isn't a good look. However, "I" think this is actually a decent decision from Sony. Not to be confused with good decision for the PS5, but a good decision for SIE in the future. Multiple reasons

1. It looks like to me, the gaming market has been shifting away from consoles including Sony. Recently they've been focused on PC, and they claimed that they have their eyes on mobile as well. Clearly the PS5 isn't their main focus now, cuz I don't feel any passion from Sony to sell the PS5 to their customers.

2. Since the PS5 isn't their main focus, they would rather sell them for profit or relatively low loss. They wouldn't want another PS3 situation. They probably aren't expecting them to sell like their previous consoles as well, because fans are going to be able to play in different platforms. People assume console sales = success for company, which isn't the case. It's the operating profit. Consoles sales determines the success of the product, not the company.

3. PS5s aren't even available for most ppl due to stock issues, so a price increase may result in seeing some on store shelves for ppl to buy.

4. Price hike makes it difficult for scalpers to put their hands on.

5. They basically shifted from: focused on consoles -> multiple platforms like Microsoft or should I say to combat Microsoft's action. Which means both the PS5 and Xbox Series are now in the target for people that can't afford a gaming pc or casual gamers in Sony/Microsoft's eyes. It's not the only place to get profit like it used to be, or a place to play their first-party games.

Overall, there are definitely cons with this decision, but ultimately this isn't a bad decision for Sony from a business perspective. What do you guys think.

The problem with your analysis is that Sony will sell out of every single system on shelves, the system is heavily supply constrained so a price hike is unlikely to impact it. To me its just an unfortunate anti-consumer move. Particularly in these hard times, sony should just take a slight hit of their hardware revenue and opposed to pushing it onto consumers.

I hope there is backlash since its such a desired, mainstream device (unlike Quest 2 which is popular but nowhere near as desired as a home console)

I don't think there's anything more to it than Sony wanting to maintain/slightly increase profit margins, whilst knowing that they can probably get away with it. Notice that the only place where MS is really competing (US) there is no price rise.

True that's the big con

This is a bad look but i understand the reasons, but makes them look so bad. They will get backlash and its not gona be pretty. A product raising price after two years, a product people cant even see in shelves...
Its not just stuff like this, everytime i go to the Supermarket i pay more every week , fuel calmed down a little after being out of control and its pre war prices. I bought mine already so this dont affect me but if i didnt i would probably not buy one.

Microsoft have one of the worst fucking years in 2021 but next year it will not be like this, they will have plenty of big games. Sony dont go to any show now, they dont show the games for next year, not a single big show to promote the console , i hate this new pr way of sony doing shit, what sony games next year? I just dont understand this company anymore

This is fucked up holy shit, could turn into a disaster for Sony. Huge difference between high scalped prices and the manufacturer itself increasing prices. It's unfathomable that Sony is doing this at a time where MS is winning the "Value/for the consumer" game.

I'm starting to think Jim Ryan really has to go. MS will capitalize on it by showing the consumer how much they love them, and Sony may pull a 180 soon after they realize the market isn't happy about their decision, but by the time they do, they will have established themselves as the villain of the industry. Just a terrible look for them.

To counter scalping, Sony should have just made more hard bundles, maybe even make every single unit a bundle and it could still be better than what they decided on.

They should of done it 2 years ago, when it was apparent that demand greatly outstripped supply.
Its now 2.5 years and I have never once seen them on shelves here.
I wonder if in a month or 2 you will start seeing them on the shelves here

I agree Jim Ryan needs to be booted before its too late.

The difference in company direction as soon as he took over is massive.

* Price hike in games $70...
* $10 cross gen upgrade...
* Barely any PS5 showcase events...
* Full price remaster of games no one asked to be remastered...
* PS5 price hike...

They did hard bundles, you cant buy just the console here in my country, bundles are always two games and headphones, two games and controller etc

I mean people still buy alot of PS5 games and PS5 is outselling Xbox Series, Even with Gamepass/Retroarch/ 2 Two Publishers with multiple studios unfiarly outnumbering Sony with Zenimax/Activision Blizzard etc. Playstation brand really is something like a final boss if it can take all those punches and still punch Xbox series to 3rd place beat down. I think Jim Ryan wants to test the heart of True Playstation fans by hiking up the price how loyal they are? I hope more Sony fans speak up about this and reverts the price back to 500$.

Cute and honest Sega Saturn fan, also noone should buy Sega grrrr, Sega for life. The reason I'm chaotic to few 3rd party developers is because I'm protecting Sega and also I lack skill to get really hot girl I really want. also few devs deserve it for making bad game's personal experiences, looking at Ghost Blade HD the shmup or Fighting EX Layer. My standards are too high for genres I play. KOF 13 > Fighting EX layer gameplay.
