Forums - Sony Discussion - PS5 VRR details: release in the coming months

"On the horizon: Variable Refresh Rate support for PS5
We're also pleased to share that Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) is planned to release on PS5 in the coming months. On HDMI 2.1-compatible TVs and PC monitors, VRR dynamically syncs the refresh rate of the display to the PS5 console's graphical output. This enhances visual performance for PS5 games by minimizing or eliminating visual artifacts, such as frame pacing issues and screen tearing. Gameplay in many PS5 titles feels smoother as scenes render instantly, graphics look crisper, and input lag is reduced. Previously released PS5 games can be fully optimized for VRR through a game patch and future games may include VRR support at launch.

As an added option, you can also choose to apply VRR to PS5 games that don't support it. This feature may improve video quality for some games. If this results in any unexpected visual effects, you can turn off this option at any time. Both VRR and this secondary option can be turned on or off."

Around the Network

Disappointing:
- game by game basis
- won't be released for a while

Exciting:
- System wide option is available

Happy for the people with VRR displays.

It's a super useful feature for games that don't hit performance when they should, especially on launch.

Good to see it coming to PS5.

Great that it's finally coming. weird that it looks to be a game-by-game basis. But it is what it is I suppose. I doubt many games are going to be negatively impacted by turning the option on.

Consoles get closer and closer to PC levels of gameplay experiences with each passing year. This is a great option to have and hopefully developers are quick to hop on it!

Awesome... I mean I'm probably not going to own a VRR capable tv anytime soon but it's still great to see every feature available.

Finally. Bit ridiculous that it took a year and a half and isn't universal, but I'm looking forward to it all the same.

Took their time but good that its finally out. Weird that its set by a game by game basis, though I guess having something is better than nothing lol. Makes for a nicer, smoother experience when there are frame drops.

Now just waiting for that 1440P support, Sony.

Honestly I don't think its ridiculous, probably only a tiny % of PS5 owners have a VRR TV and not many games are truly in need of it (like Eldern Ring). If it wasn't for digital Foundary, I think it'd be at the back of 99% of people's minds.
