Forums - Movies Discussion - Best movie opening?

What is the best movie opening? I'll start with a classic:

Once Upon a Time in the West (1968)

Veeeery slow opening, no words from the main actors, no music, lot's of ambient sounds, wide vista shots, faces like mountain ridges

Opening part I

Opening part II

Opening part III

From the 90s:

Blade (1998)

Most memorable scene from that movie. Descent into madness and hammering 90s techno rave.

A Star Wars title crawl.

Fight Club, love the transition and foreshadowing (you can skip to 1:00 ... long opening credits)

Inglourious Basterds - one of the most iconic opening scenes in the history of cinema

28 weeks later - I don't really remember this movie, but this opening scene still haunts me. This clip is missing first 4 mins or so, which establishes a connection between John and his wife ... which makes this scene even harder to watch.

Lord of War - like above, I don't really remember the move but I vividly remember this opening scene.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. 10-12 minutes of introduction without a single word said. And yet, it still manages to hook the viewer. A masterpiece.

Really? I found it boring literally the second time they ever did it.

Inglourious Basterds
A tons of James Bond openings (Tomorrow Never Dies, Golden Eye, Casino Royale, Skyfall being my favorites.)

Signature goes here!

Gotta join in with everyone saying Inglourious Basterds.

I'm not sure whether opening here refers to just the first little bit, the first scene, the first act, I guess it can be anything. One I really like is the opening of Alien, literally just the intro with the title of the movie appearing bit by bit. Ridley Scott kinda ruined it by doing it again in other movies, but that first time was cool.

Also, I can't be here and not post this.

It's been a while since I last said it, but it's still very much the case that this is the best movie ever made.

I make music, check it out here on Bandcamp, Spotify, and Youtube!
