Forums - Gaming Discussion - Amy Hennig, former Naughty Dog veteran and Uncharted creator, is working on a AAA Marvel Game

Amy Hennig has had a long and storied career in the games industry. She started out working for Nintendo in the late 80's, then worked on an Atari game called Electrocop, then worked at EA on Bard's Tale 4, Desert Strike, and Michael Jordan: Chaos in Windy City, then worked at Crystal Dynamics on Legacy of Kain, then moved to Naughty Dog where she directed Jak 3 and created and directed Uncharted 1-3. In 2014 she had a much publicized falling out with Naughty Dog leadership after they reportedly forced her to accept assistance from The Last of Us co-directors Neil Druckmann and Bruce Straley on Uncharted 4. She then went to EA's Visceral Games to work on a Star Wars game codenamed Project Ragtag, but EA made the decision to close Visceral Games 3 years later in 2017, and Amy Hennig left EA several months later after failing to find a new project that interested her within EA. In 2019 she joined movie studio Skydance Media to start a new Interactive division there focused on story driven games. It was later announced that her team was assisting Square Enix's Luminous Productions on Forspoken.

Now it has been announced that Amy Hennig and her team at Skydance are developing their 1st fully in-house title, a AAA story driven Marvel game:

Skydance New Media, the new interactive division of Skydance Media helmed by award-winning writer and director Amy Hennig, announced today a partnership with Marvel Entertainment to develop a narrative-driven, blockbuster action-adventure game, featuring a completely original story and take on the Marvel Universe. This marks the first initiative from the new AAA game studio, which was formed by Hennig and Electronic Arts veteran Julian Beak to pioneer a new category of story-focused interactive entertainment—a groundbreaking convergence of games, film, and television.

“I can’t imagine a better partner than Marvel for our first game,” said Hennig, President, Skydance New Media. “The Marvel Universe epitomizes all the action, mystery and thrills of the pulp adventure genre that I adore and lends itself perfectly to an interactive experience. It’s an honor to be able to tell an original story with all the humanity, complexity, and humor that makes Marvel characters so enduring and to enable our players to embody these heroes that they love.”

“Amy has been setting the bar for narrative adventure games for decades and we are happy to be collaborating with the talented and experienced New Media team at Skydance,” said Jay Ong, Executive Vice President & Head of Marvel Games. “Their ambition and vision for making innovative entertainment using beloved Marvel IP was obvious from our first meeting. We’re excited to share more with Marvel fans when the time is right.”

To create this all-new interactive experience, Skydance New Media has assembled an accomplished crew of developers with decades of AAA experience in action and adventure gaming, as well as a diverse team of creative consultants from the worlds of film, television, and comics. The Skydance New Media team is laser-focused on creating high-fidelity, richly interactive experiences crafted for traditional gaming platforms as well as emerging streaming services and designed to be appealing, inviting, and accessible to a global audience.

“We are enormously excited to be working inside the Marvel Universe to craft a rich narrative of our own,” said Beak, Executive Vice President & GM, Skydance New Media. “Jay and his team at Marvel Games are helping us make the best experiences imaginable.”

is it bad I still know Amy Hennig best as the writer from the Legacy of Kain series? It is a very underrated series with fantastic writing.

As for the new Marvel game. I hope it turns out to be good. We have yet to see a successful Marvel game that isn't starring Spider-Man. Unless you count the LEGO games.

Now knowing that Amy Hennig is running it took me from zero to no interest to intrigued.

Hoping we get a hero/series that hasn't been done to death. Something like Blade would be amazing.

Based on a leak from a year and a half ago that is now looking like it's true (because the leaker knew about the upcoming Wolverine game more than a year in advance of it's announcement), it seems that there is an open world AAA Daredevil game in development. There is a possibility that Amy Hennig's team is on this Daredevil game, however the leaker mentioned at the time that the game was aiming for release in late 2021 or 2022 (likely 2023 now as this leak was pre-Covid pandemic), while Amy Hennig only started building this new team in 2019, so it seems unlikely that her studio would be aiming to release a game as soon as 2022 or 2023. So the Daredevil game may be by an unknown studio with Amy Hennig working on something else.

Not at all! I think the same thing. It's one of my favorite series and I've always hoped that she would return to it and either reboot it or finish the story.

With how long it has been since the last entry, I would say a reboot would make more sense.

I could see it being the rumored DareDevil game (or at least said game existing) seeing how he's confirmed to exist in Marvel's Spidey universe from the first game and Wolverine is confirmed to be connected while forming their own shared gaming universe. Even if it's not, I could see him being featured as an NPC, Easter egg or DLC in Marvel's Spider-Man 2 (I was hoping we'd get a DareDevil DLC for the first Sony Spider-Man game, but it sadly didn't happen).

An open-world Punisher game would be cool, and since Marvel's Wolverine will supposedly be M-rated (probably with minimal, if any Spider-Man references for obvious reasons much like how the Netfllix shows were treated), they'll be allowed to keep Frank as violent and badass as he needs to be to do right by the character. He also has some "history" with both Spidey and Wolverine in the comics (and DareDevil, too!), so he'd fit right in. Don't know if they'd have the guts to tackle such heavy subject matter with his recent "controversy", though.
