First Party

Matt Booty: “First and foremost, we are committed to building a diverse collection of studios that deliver a predictable pipeline of high-quality games. First, we continue to invest in the studios behind our tentpole franchises. Second, we are growing our studios organization through acquisition. People that we have relationships with, teams who have delivered games through both success and have seen some adversity, and studios that have a proven track record of new ideas. And we know that a thriving entertainment service needs a consistent and exciting flow of new content. So our portfolio will continue to grow as our service grows."

I honestly figured that the xCloud Series X upgrade would be delayed considering the shortages, but now it is looking like the xCloud server upgrades is actually one of the causes for the shortages. It will take quite alot of Series X chipsets to upgrade all of the xCloud servers, hundreds of thousands of them most likely, they must have been saving them up for a few months now already. At least once the server centers are all upgraded to Series X hardware, the Series X stock situation at retail should improve.

The xCloud smart TV app and the streaming stick will greatly expand the reach of xCloud, soon it will basically be available to everybody who wants to use it. Expanding xCloud into 4 more countries this year will also expand it's reach a good bit.

Great to hear that the first party will still be expanding, and it sounds like their 2nd party partners are all targets for acquisition, which is good, because they have very good 2nd party partners currently, including some AAA studios.

Can’t wait for the Xcloud on console. Will give me a chance to try some games before committing to downloading it on my SSD.

Streaming a brand new game to try before you buy sounds amazing. It’s also great for GamePass games you might not care to download before trying.

One AAA game per quarter sounds too good to be true but it’s certainly possible if they expand a bit more.

Also it’s great that they got this out of the way now and can hopefully focus more on games on Sunday.

They are actually getting pretty close to that goal of being able to release one AAA 1st party game per quarter now, it will just take a bit of time to get the cycle started due to some needed studio expansion, as well as some studios that had prior contractual obligations before MS acquired them that they had to finish before they could begin work on their 1st Xbox exclusives. Xbox now has 13 AAA 1st party studios and an additional 5 AAA teams within those studios, for 18 AAA teams total:

  1. 343 Industries- Halo Infinite
  2. Zenimax Online Studios 2nd team (some rumors of a Star Wars Mandalorian game)
  3. Zenimax Online Studios 3rd team (new IP)
  4. Bethesda Game Studios- Starfield, TES 6
  5. Playground Racing team- Forza Horizon 5
  6. Playground RPG team- Fable reboot
  7. id Software- Unknown next project, probably a new Doom or Rage 3
  8. Arkane Lyon- Deathloop
  9. Arkane Austin- Omen (rumored)
  10. Obsidian AAA team- Avowed
  11. The Coalition team 1- Likely Gears 6
  12. The Coalition team 2- New IP (rumored to be a hero shooter like Overwatch)
  13. Turn 10- Forza Motorsport reboot
  14. Machine Games- Wolfenstein 3, Indiana Jones
  15. inXile- New AAA RPG IP
  16. The Initiative- Perfect Dark reboot
  17. Tango team #1- Ghostwire Tokyo
  18. Tango team #2- Likely Evil Within 3

With 16 AAA studios they could have a 4 year dev cycle per game and still release one AAA per quarter, and they have 18, 2 more than they need for that. However, it is worth noting that 2 of the above studios are working on games that are going to be supported with new content the whole generation, Halo Infinite and Forza Motorsport reboot, so we won't be getting a 2nd AAA Halo or Forza game from them this gen most likely, so they may not be able to contribute much to the one AAA per quarter goal. As such, it would be wise for MS to acquire a few more AAA studios in order to hit their one AAA 1st party game per quarter goal. More studios would also allow them to give studios more than 4 years of development time if they need more.

Rumors are now that MS has acquired 3 new studios.

I’m guessing Sega, Sony, and Crytek.

I'm curious about the flight sim trailer. I missed the eclipse this morning (the sun comes up over a ridge here, by the time it was over the trees the show was over) but saw the partial eclipse happening in FS2020 while flying from Haiti to Jamaica this morning.

Get the Series X version released, then Asobo can work on improvements for the PC version again!
