Forums - Gaming Discussion - In a word: frustrating - Oddworld: Soulstorm Review

To imagine: my PC magically deleted the folder of this review tossing 3 hours of my pre-editing work down the drain. The frustration I felt ironically led perfectly into the review.

Full written review can be read here: http://zyro-eg.com/2021/04/22/oddworld-soulstorm-review/

Thanks for the review, I had it on my to watch for list after Eurogamer's praise

I'll remove it from my list, not looking for frustration. It seems to be another graphics over fun game play situation.

Oh it's unforgettable alright... Some sections took 10+ tries, and that section I showed that's particularly frustrating took me 20+ tries because some of the times I made it, SOOO many Mudokons died!  Ughhhhhhhhh

A lot of gamers have higher expectations for this game. Some are also enjoying it. You can test it and give your own opinion about it.

I enjoyed the remake a lot. Once I have a ps5 I might consider trying it out. At least restarts/reloads should be quick from ssd.

I mean, I don't think it's the expectations: you HAVE to be a glutton for punishment or really just not give a rats ass about the entire goal of the game in saving Mudokons to enjoy it lol...  I basically go on "media shutout" prior to and during a review of a game until I've completed my own, but you can see how it's basically unanimous that the game is "brutal"/"difficult"/"challenging"/"frustrating" on the whole.  When mostly everyone is saying it, it means it's just that prominent, and some of us (like myself) just don't like that part of the game's trial-and-error method is trolling you with situations you can't possibly see coming until you die several times, ergo... frustration :P

Good point: I didn't even think of what it would be like on the PS4, though from what I can tell from the engine, a lot of the assets between checkpoints remain "loaded" and just reset position, so the "reload" times after death on PS4 should still be seconds like the PS5.

I honestly thought it was easier than New N' Tasty. Some controls were kind of jank and the difficulty curve was a bit over the place (you can finish the last stages with tons of resources) but I still had a blast with it and look forward to the next one. Hopefully, it won't take as long.

Oh I didn't realize it was on PS+, I added it to my library, can try it out for 'free' when I find a PS5.
The lists changes on the 5th (Wednesday) then Wreckfest is added for PS5.

Gosh, luckily I was never interested in Oddworld, although the characters look nice.
