Forums - Gaming Discussion - Update: Other Sonic cast members may be replaced as well | The end of an era, RCS is no longer the voice of Sonic the Hedgehog

After 10 years, Roger Craig Smith has been replaced as the voice of Sonic the Hedgehog by Sega:

Sega has always had a habit of replacing voice actors on the Sonic games, Sonic himself will now be on his 4th actor after 21 years of voiced Sonic games, Knuckles is now on his 6th voice actor, and Tails is on his 6th actor/actress. Roger Craig Smith as Sonic and Travis Willingham as Knuckles had the 2 longest stints as Sonic and Knuckles respectively of any actor so far, Roger was the voice of Sonic for 10 years from 2010-2020, while Travis was the voice of Knuckles for 8 years from 2010-2018, before being replaced by Dave B Mitchell in Team Sonic Racing.

On the plus side to this news, the fact that Roger just learned that he has been replaced seemingly means that voice recording has now started on Sonic Team's next big Sonic game, which is rumored to be getting a late 2021 release with 4 years of development for Sonic's 30th anniversary this year. Since voice recording is among the final stages of game development, the project does seem to still be on schedule for release this year.

Update

Today the voice actress for Amy said that she is being replaced, and suggested that the full voice cast from her era of Sonic (2010-2020) is being replaced.

The one possible exception is Mike Pollack, Eggman's voice actor, when she tweeted that, he replied with this:

People aren't really sure if he is hinting that he is out too, or if he is hinting that she is wrong about the whole cast being replaced because he is staying.

tbh I don't care who the VA is, just make a decent game Sonic Team

Was his debut in Sonic Colors?

That's ok. I don't hate em, but he did not leave the same impact that the previous VA's for Sonic left on me.

Well, it and Sonic Free Riders were his first games, they released 1 day apart. His actual debut though was voice-over for the Sonic roller coaster ride at Alton Towers, which caused immediate fan backlash when it was first unveiled, people hated his voice on that ride, said that it was too slow and too deep, said that he sounded more like a stereotypical 90's surfer dude than Sonic. Turned out that the people who edited the voice clips for the Sonic ride slowed them down for whatever reason. When Roger's actual Sonic voice was revealed in the Sonic Colors debut trailer, people thought it was much, much better. Since then he has become the longest lasting and best known out of the 3 Sonic game voice actors, the other 2 being Ryan Drummond (1999-2004) and Jason Griffith (2005-2010).

Interesting. He voiced Sonic for a long time.

And Mike Pollock is still Robotnik/Eggman.

Damn shame, I really enjoyed him as Sonic.

Personally, my #1 Sonic VA is Jason Griffith, yeah Sonic X isn’t all that good. But he REALLY started hitting his stride around Unleashed and Black Knight. But RCS was no slouch. He definitely got the ‘cocky prick’ part of Sonic’s character down to a tee.

But while we’re on the topic, I have an idea on Sonic’s new VA! Max Mittelman!!!

Well, I mean, that's kind of necessary.

A shame but cycles must end, I enjoyed his performances.

My bet with The_Liquid_Laser: I think the Switch won't surpass the PS2 as the best selling system of all time. If it does, I'll play a game of a list that The_Liquid_Laser will provide, I will have to play it for 50 hours or complete it, whatever comes first.

Ezio/Batman/Wonder Blue/Sonic/Chris Redfield and more. RCS was the best Sonic ever. One of the better VA's out there and certainly better than the overrated Baker and North.

Remember when Urkel was Sonic?

I remember.
