Forums - Sony Discussion - PS4 to PS5 transition will take 3 years, more cross-gen games coming from Sony

From a recent interview with Sony Interactive Entertainment Vice President Hideaki Nishino:

"In terms of compatibility, it is important to move PS4 titles on PS5, but I have insisted that forward compatibility (supplying the same titles as PS5 to PS4) is important," Nishino said.

"The current assumption is that the transition from PS4 to PS5 will take about three years. In the meantime, how can I keep buying games on PS4? Can the purchased games be played on PS5? That is important."

"At a certain time, we ask developers to develop on the premise of "cross generation" of PS4 and PS5. Of course, we also need to improve the library to make it easier."

Today Sony lost me as a customer.

Legend11 correctly predicted that GTA IV (360+PS3) would outsell SSBB. I was wrong.

Develop on the premise of "cross-generation"? What year is this, 2007?

Eh, they say that but I fully expect them to still have exclusives that are only on PS5 in that 3 year period. I don't think multi-platform games will stay on PS4 for the whole 3-year estimation either.

Why would I buy a ps5 than? I bought into the promise of an ssd that would make completely new game design possible. No long, winding corridors, no bland nothing in between interesting stuff that has to be loaded in, etc. If I have a 10+ tflop + super fast ssd machine to play games that run perfectly fine on something that will be 10 years old after those 3 years are over, I might aswell buy the ps5 in 3 years. Can't they see how this is bad in many consumers eyes? I think it is obvious that no one would be hurt if they leave the ps4 behind after Horizon 2. With this they will just hurt ps5 sales. After a long ps4 generation people are ready to buy new tech. Don't give them less reason to want this.

Well, we already know of many PS5 only exclusives even in the first year of support, God of War 5, Gran Turismo 7, Returnal, Ratchet & Clank, Deathloop, Ghostwire Tokyo, etc. But they have also announced several cross-gen exclusives for the first year, Horizon Forbidden West, Sackboy, Kena, Spider-Man Miles Morales, Guilty Gear Strive. So I guess we will see a mix of PS5 only and PS5/PS4 1st/2nd/3rd party PS exclusives from 2021-2023, with each year getting more and more PS5 only and less PS4/PS5 games.

There, you just cracked the code for smart gaming. No game or system is worth buying at launch price. If more people where patient, maybe, just maybe, we wouldn't have $70 games now.

After the numerous debate on the question, gamer patience isn't much of an issue here. But yeah, since games launch have been much more front-loaded recently. It is to these company pure greedy benefits to raise their prices.

Wow. Goopy honestly should be un-banned.Id love to see what he has to say on this after he gave MS so much shit for the same thing.Anyone with a brain should of known this would be pretty much the case anyways since engines are so scalable now and the wont be many titles in the first 2-3 years to take full advantage of the new features. But this is one more reason why i like the xbox camp more this gen. At least MS are up front about things like this.

Couldn't have said it better myself.
