Forums - Sony Discussion - On the Subject of PS5 Backwards Compatibility

Recently Sony talked about the backwards compatibility of PS5, and posted a list of games confirmed to not work on PS5.

The list is subject to change (as more games are tested).

Earlier today there was some confusion as Ubisoft posted an article listing some of their games as "Not backwards compatible" on PS5, but then removed the article, citing;

“We have pulled the Ubisoft Connect article and forum post re backwards compatibility for the time being as there may be inaccuracies involving the Ubisoft titles that will be playable on PS5.”
https://nordic.ign.com/news/41114/ubisoft-reveals-full-ps5-xbox-series-x-upgrade-plan-some-assassins-creed-games-arent-backwards-compa

The list of Ubisoft games can be found in the link above.
We'll have to wait for a followup statement to see what may have been inaccurate.

Though on the subject, someone datamined the new Playstation site (https://library.playstation.com) and found that it lists the BC status of a lot of games.
Here's a list of them: https://andshrew.github.io/supreme-enigma/

Games BC status is divided into four categories.

  • COMPATIBLE - "To play this game on PS5, your system may need to be updated to the latest system software. Although this game is playable on PS5, some features available on PS4 may be absent"
  • BOOTABLE - "When playing on PS5, this game may exhibit errors or unexpected behaviour and some features available on PS4 may be absent. To play this game on PS5, your system may need to be updated to the latest system software"
  • NOT_COMPATIBLE - Only playable on on PS4
  • N/A - No information available in API (mostly old alpha, beta, and demo titles)

Note that this data is clearly still a work in progress. Last week it listed P.T. as COMPATIBLE, but it now lists it as NOT_COMPATIBLE.
It's possible that some of the Ubisoft games may be amended in the same way.

I wonder about those Ubisoft games, as Syndicate and a few other Assassins Creed games were said not to work with PS5.

Doesn’t seem to be any surprises in the not compatible section. As mentioned before, being able to play BC is a nice bonus. but the reason you buy consoles is for new games and expierences.

Anyone getting the irony how console threads now sound exactly like emulator threads?

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

I own two Kinects.
TWO.

None of my Kinect games are making the transition. I'll survive so I guess Sony fans will survive, too.

One of my main reasons for going with the XSX over PS5 at the start of the gen is having BC with all three of MS other generations, among other things.

As mentioned many times, what some might consider a nice bonus others might see as a driving factor.  Niether side is objective, but it is always a good laugh to see people try to act like their opinion is fact (one way or the other).

"Were said to not work" where? Are you referring to the Ubisoft article "“We have pulled the Ubisoft Connect article and forum post re backwards compatibility for the time being as there may be inaccuracies involving the Ubisoft titles that will be playable on PS5.”"

You can use the user-made https://andshrew.github.io/supreme-enigma/ to search Playstation's search for whatever game you are looking for.

All five variants of Syndicate is listed as "bootable".   When an option such as "not_compatible" is a choice then "bootable" means there is a level of compatibility.

None of the assassin creeds games are listed as "non_compatible" and even at least one of those games found on that now deleted article we even listed as 'compatible' not just bootable.

  • Deadliest mass shooting by an individual in US history (10/01/2017)
  • Deadliest high school shooting in US history (02/14/2018)
  • Deadliest massacre of Jews in US history (10/27/2018)
  • Political assassination attempt of TWO former presidents(and 10+ other people)  (10/23/2018 - and beyond)

Better put a sticker in stores on the box that says BC with PS5. Like the 360 eras with OG Xbox games.

Bite my shiny metal cockpit!

Not that I want to play Hitman but this is seriously disappointing news
https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2020-10-31-hitman-3-requires-the-ps4-version-to-play-on-psvr-even-on-ps5

Apparently PSVR, although working on PS5 with an adapater (don't know what for), will not make use of any enhancements and you need the use the original ps4 versions to be able to play them in VR on PS5. So faster loading times is all you'll get.

Still hoping that next to faster loading, frame rate issues in NMS will be gone as well as resolution scaling (for example when sprinting in RE7). But I guess no chance at higher resolutions / super sampling for PSVR on PS5. Might as well stick to the ps4 pro.

The adapter is simply a converter for the ps4 camera connector, to USB. You can request one for free if the site would load https://global.support.playstation.com/s/pscamera-adaptor?language=en_US. The new ps5 camera is not compatible with PSVR, wtf.

Not complete BC though but I guess you are aware of that?

XSX has BC with:
All XB1 games (except Kinect games)
~25% of Xbox 360 games
41 original Xbox games

Still better than PS5 BC but far from complete.
