Forums - Movies Discussion - Best Lord of the Rings film

I think the best is...

Fellowship of the Ring 11 17.19%

Two Towers 20 31.25%

Return of the King 33 51.56%

Total:64

Which of the trilogy do you consider the best, and why?

Bet with Liquidlaser: I say PS5 and Xbox Series will sell more than 56 million combined by the end of 2023.

Why leave out the 70s animated ones? Maybe not my fave but they are someones. They are at least interesting.

Bite my shiny metal cockpit!

Best adventure film with aura of mystery? Fellowship.

Best war movie? Two Towers

Best story? Return of the King.

They are each beautiful films in their own way and exceeding one another for different reasons.

Return of the King.

One day their may come a time when we get tired of this movie and choose one of the other two movies.  But not this day!

A lot of people like to say The Two Towers is the best, but all I remember from that film is the battle of Helm's Deep. My ranking goes Return of the King > Fellowship of the Ring > The Two Towers. All three are great, but the best character work and the best action are in The Return of the King, while the Fellowship has the most memorable scenes for me, personally (Since at this point it hadn't turned into an all-out fantasy war film by then and still had loads of joy and terror).

Like I said, all three of them were truly outstanding films and might be the best film trilogy of all time, but that's my ranking.

Then again, I actually DO like The Hobbit trilogy, even if I think it'd have been better if it was a single movie as opposed to a trilogy.

I got it all, baby!

PS4, Switch, WiiU, XBO, PC
Vita, 3DS, Android

Top 6 this generation:
Bloodborne, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, God of War, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Dark Souls III, Red Dead Redemption II

All of them are great.

They're all excellent. I think Fellowship is the best paced and Return certainly the most epic, but I think my favorite might be Two Towers. From the character development of Smeagol to one of the best battles and best speeches put to film, I think it's the one that inspires and moves me most.

All 3 are excellent, but Two Towers is the best of the bunch. I will die on this hill!

Has the best soundtrack, love the Merry and Pippin Ent storyline and the main party storyline (though the Frodo and Sam storyline in Two Towers is admittedly weaker than in Return of the King, with the exception being Sam's amazing speech at the end), Eowyn is introduced and is one of my favorite characters in Lord of the Rings, the Battle of Helm's Deep is one of the most impressive things in cinema history (battle took 120 days and nights of filming with 20 hours of footage recorded, and then edited down into 40 minutes, most of the rain in the battle is real, with a massive number of extras hired to make up the armies, in order to cut down on CGI as much as possible).

This is a really good answer. In one way or another, all 3 are best at something. But I do think that Two Towers is overall the best of the 3.

Fellowship by a very very long shot. Jackson got Lucas syndrome with the last two and by the time the Hobbit films rolled around, the movies were unbearable. All of the LotR are very watchable, though.
