Forums - Gaming Discussion - (Rumor) Resident Evil 8 details leaked, Q1 2021 release, Ethan and Chris return, and more

In the past few months, we’ve had a lot of random information cross our desks possibly pertaining to Resident Evil 8. This stuff reaches from the ridiculous to the highly plausible.

In the “highly plausible” category, we’ve recently heard more from the anonymous emailer that seems promising. In the email they sent with the subject line, “It’s me again” this is what they’ve said.

The title

To start, it seems likely that 8 will have a subtitle, this time Village. At the least, this is the working title. Given the formatting for 7, it’ll likely be this way so as to highlight the VIII for a Roman numeral 8. So the “clever title” part we were first told about seems to fit with this.

Our idea of what the title would look like

In addition, a lot of the information previously provided to us has been expanded upon.

Witch

The nature and origin of this witch remain to be seen, but what the leaks CAN tell us is that the witch will be similar to Marguerite: she operates with insects. When defeated, she even dissipates into them and as reported in our original leak article, she is known to “haunt” the player in the demo and has a distinctive “laugh”.

Chris

The divisive appearance of one Chris Redfield in the finale (and DLC) of 7 set a rough precedent for recurring characters in the new engine. Thankfully, the remakes have since fixed that worry, but Chris has yet to appear since.

According to the leak, Chris will be playing an integral part in 8. He appears in flashbacks surrounding Ethan, Mia, and apparently their baby. What this baby has to do with the narrative is as of yet unclear. That being said, Chris doesn’t seem to be looking very heroic this time around. It appears that in a flashback sequence Chris can be seen shooting one of them while breaking into their home.

So has Chris gone deep cover, or has all of the years staring into the abyss finally caught up with him?

He also apparently looks a bit different, trying to bridge the gap between the original, burly Chris and the newer, slimmer one.

Ethan

This is just me thinking out loud, but given the situation and the fact that Ethan is now in the thick of it a second time, it’s likely that Ethan will be more of a character this time, also. I think it would be interesting to see Ethan as a “lone wolf”-like character on a mission to take on evil and wipe it from the Earth. With Resident Evil 7 having an Evil Dead vibe and several references, it would make sense for Capcom to turn Ethan into more of a wise-cracking badass like Ash Williams.

And Others

Aside from story teases, the leak also gets into some information about gameplay mechanics, as well as other odds and ends.

We’d previously stated based on our sources and others that the game will take place in a European setting, which is where Ethan encounters Chris and triggers a flashback. So all of that seems to still be in order from the previous rumors testing last year. Also as of this time it appears the first-person perspective will be returning.

They also noted that this game is slated to release in Q1 of 2021, but of course, with the global COVID-19 pandemic, that might change.

RE3.5 version 2.0?

Also, it seems that Capcom is playing with the concept of inventory management again. The email suggests that they are testing both a Resident Evil 7 style UI alongside a Resident Evil 4 style. Which is interesting to note considering all the buzz about a Resident Evil 4 remake. Maybe it is likely as well?

Another strange element is hallucinations, one of the things that makes 8 feel a bit like 3.5. These hallucinations will likely make it hard for you to discern what’s real and what isn’t and more importantly… Who to trust.

The most recent rounds of testing in March were likely for Resident Evil 8 and that’s why there’s new information. Since RE3 has released, we can safely assume they were testing something new. Jesse had speculated these previous testers have all been actually testing 8, not 3.

While this does seem that it is a departure, known insider Dusk Golem states he believes Resident Evil 8 started as Revelations 3. So that does help it to make a bit more sense for the change if true.

Grain of Salt

Remember, we report things as they come to us. We never can verify our info, aside from shopping it around to other leakers and seeing what matches. Even then, nothing is confirmed until Capcom says it is.

Despite that, we like to entertain the information we DO receive.

You never know; sometimes, there’s a diamond in the dirt.

Capcom also held a survey for both the current REmakes they've released, as well as their upcoming RE projects.

I decided to fill in my love for the Remakes (despite a few complaints and also telling them why I didn't buy it at launch in the question box), but when asked "will you play future resident evil series?" I put down "no", because quite frankly, with the direction the franchise is going in since 7, I'm thinking I'm fed up with the IP. The remakes were mostly decent and definitely got kudos from me, but I absolutely hated everything 7 stood for, and I'm really not liking the direction they could be taking with 8, in where we get yet another Resi 7 style game, completely abandoning what they just achieved with remakes of the OG games (it screams the flip flopping they pulled with Resi 1-3 to Resi 4-6 all over again).

Next year's Q1 will be too early so it will be a fake.

Yeah, I'm also not a big fan of the direction they are taking the mainline series in with 7 and 8. According to this and other recent leaks, 8 is going to be doubling down on the 1st person viewpoint and going even deeper into the psychological horror field than 7 did. We have plenty of these 1st person horror games already, Amnesia 2 is coming this year, Red Barrels is likely making Outlast 3, Bloober Team makes them. Res was one of the few good 3rd person horror franchises, so why are they trying to escape from 3rd person into first? Why are they trying to escape from zombie horror into psychological horror? Not a big fan of this direction change at all.

I'm a bit of unique case in that I actually liked 6 and would love to get a sequel to it, I want to see more of Jake and Sherry, more of Leon and Helena. I don't necessarily want to see as heavy of an action focus as 6 had, but a healthy mix of action and survival horror would be nice to see. I loved the sheer over-the-topness of 6 and would love to see more of that from the series, it was why the Res 7 DLC where you punched zombies to death was my favorite thing about Res 7 by far.

But, in addition to a proper sequel to 6, even if it came in the form of a spinoff rather than a mainline game, I definitely want to see them continue the remakes. Code Veronica should come next, then 4, 5, and 6. By the time they get around to 5 and 6 remakes we'd be looking at a 2 generation graphical improvement, enough to justify remaking them imo.

What makes you say that? According to recent leaks Res 8 entered development as Resident Evil Revelations 3 back in 2016, even before Res 7 released, but was converted into Res 8 after Capcom higher-ups loved an early tech demo for the game. The plot was reworked to be a sequel to 7 with Ethan made the playable character. We'd be looking at 3+ years of development as Res 8 if it releases Q1 2021, Res 7 was made in 3 years. Bear in mind that Resident Evil 2 remake was developed by a totally different team within Capcom than the one that made Res 7 and is working on Res 8, while Resident Evil 3 Remake was primarily contracted out to 3rd party studios with minimal development by Capcom themselves.

Honestly, RE2 Remake should set the template for any future RE titles. It was the perfect survival horror game. It kept the atmosphere, basic survival horror mechanics, puzzles, and non-linear style of the original, but moved it to a third-person over-the-shoulder perspective and gave it proper, modern shooter controls (tank controls were garbage, and were purely a product of the limitations of the time), making it a far more enjoyable gameplay experience overall.

I agree, i was constantly thinking throughout my play through that this is the direction the franchise should go in. The gameplay feels like the natural next step for the series. Although I still admire them for trying something different with 7.

That would be a very good think to play on PS5. And yes gameplay wise I liked both RE7 and RE2 Remake.

A bit more info on what some folk testing the game, found out:

Either way, I'm think I'm once again skipping out on another sequel...

I wish Capcom would stop trying to emulate other games, and just go with what they originally had instead.

My beef with Resident Evil is when exactly is it gonna end? How long are they gonna drag out the RE1-4 cast? RE is need of hard reboot or a decade jump. Isnt Chris like 50 now?
