Due to compression, 720p on youtube looks like about 540p in a video game.

And hell, I'm still able to play Wii games in 480p and enjoy them, so 720p is a walk in the park by comparison.

720p is more than triple the pixel count of 480p. Even to the average person that transition was obvious. And again, that's the point. 720p was lumped in with the transition to HD TVs which was a massive leap over 480p in picture quality.

The 720p YouTube does looks bad on a large screen. That's why they removed it from their HD filter. On my phone though, the disparity between 720p and 1080p is less significant.

I'm aware.

Anyway, I play at 720p and even sub-HD a lot of the time, so I'm not a stickler for high pixel counts.

720p is absolutely blurry and should not be considered HD.

Depends on the post processing effects. It can vary significantly. BF4, Dead Rising 3 and Tekken 7 are all 720p for example. BF4 actually looks okay probably due to good post processing, Dead Rising 3 is pixelated, while Tekken 7 objectively is blurry.

Also, the poll question is dumb. I am not aware of any game that isn't viable (playable) at 720p. If so, maybe a game with tiny text or a RTS?

Last, we should also consider 720p on YouTube doesn't look great. 480p on YouTube also doesn't look like a DVD.

I disagree, even on PS4 lots of games that are 900p do not look very sharp at all. AC games look quite blurry on the console.

Battlefield 4 on PS4 runs at 900p I haven't seen it at 720p, it doesn't look blurry in 900p but I wouldn't necessarily call it sharp.

Just took Crash Team Racing on the Switch for a spin, a native 720p game.

On my 42 inch living room TV, (which is situated roughly 3 meters from my eyeballs when I'm on the couch) it still looks perfectly acceptable, definitely not blurry.

For me personally, anything over 720p is just gravy, and anything over 1080p feels unnecessary.

It could be your eyesight, I don't know but 1440p is significantly clearer than 1080p.

I don't own a 4K screen but it is literally night and day compared to 1080p. Just simply going to a TV section of a store and looking at the 4k stock footage is enough to see. I've not seen 8k so I can't vouch for that but 4K is on another world compared to 1080p.

My vision is 20/20, I don't have a problem seeing.

I've seen 4K content in TV stores and at friends' houses and while it does look great, it seems like diminishing returns to me, not like the big leap that going from SD to HD was.

Fair enough, have to agree to disagree :)

Good cause 720p really sucks

Again, 720p and 900p can be blurry with post processing effects. That's the compromise made sometimes for less jaggies with low performance impact.

If you play early 1080p games from this gen they can be surprisingly pixelated. I was surprised to see that when I revisited Driveclub.

Modern games have opted to make the image blurry to hide jaggies. It impacts low resolutions most, which is why Switch games can look like soup.

It doesn't. Still holds up as a bare minimum.

My bet with The_Liquid_Laser: I think the Switch won't surpass the PS2 as the best selling system of all time. If it does, I'll play a game of a list that The_Liquid_Laser will provide, I will have to play it for 50 hours or complete it, whatever comes first.

720P is not HD...

but far lower is viable for gaming.
