It has it's flaws, but the game is excellent and a must buy for any fan of turn based combat.

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

If you liked Final Fantasy 6, then I would highly recommend it.  To me it looks like when a PS1 or maybe PS2 turn based-RPG would have looked like if it had stayed in 2D.  The combat system is really well done.  The different gameplay elements for the whole game are well done in general.  Also they have what I would call a bunch of mini-stories, and some of these are very interesting while others are only so-so.

On the other hand if you really want cutting edge 3D graphics or one long in-depth story to your RPGs, then I would say move on to something else.  Octopath Traveler is very well made for what it is, but some are not going to like it simply for what it is.

I don't care THAT much about graphics tbh, if I find everything cute and well made enough that's fine for me

But yeah, a well made story is problably my main concern for RPGs. There are some games that I disliked the gameplay, but still enjoyed the game a lot because I've found the story nice and felt in love with some characters

Square can do amazing things when they stick to their strengths instead of trying to reinvent the wheel. Bravely Default is another great example.

But I am sure the next final fantasy will be a mix of k-pop, wii-fit and FPS, with edges, leather and points going out of every place.

Just hoping they don't manage to break 7, because the hype is real.

While I think FF7 Remake will be great, I think the big concern will be the episodic nature of the remake. Once the story and game opens up after Midgar, how will Square Enix divide it up, while staying true to the intentions of the original game? I haven't gotten past Midgar yet, but I heard the game opens up to show how big the world is post-Midgar.

Anyway, great news for Octopath Traveler. I think this shows that third party games can succeed on Switch if developers put their mind and effort into it. Its not gonna be a technical marvel like say FF7 Remake or Red Dead Redepmtion 2, but you can create incredible games on Switch that can be complementary of the hardware. Astral Chain (developed by Platinum Games) is another example. Heck, even Dragon Quest XI S is a great example of effort and commitment to a port from a PS4 game. I know most developers will likely not care for developing new experiences on Switch, but games like Octopath Traveler and Astral Chain show that great third party games can be developed for Switch and succeed.

Don't know if you have played Final Fantasy 7 or 9 before.  Both games are available on the e-shop, and I think they might even be on sale now.  They both have extremely good gameplay and a fantastic story and characters.  The only thing that might turn people off are the dated graphics, but that doesn't sound like a concern to you.  Final Fantasy 8 also has a really good story, but the combat system is not that great IMO.

I love Octopath, so this is great news! It took me over a year to beat the final boss. That fight is rough. But I finally did it last month! I'm inordinately proud of myself. Definitely a must-have for old-school JRPG fans.

While it is not my cup of tea, it seems like a very well made game for what it is with a very charming and attractive art style, and a cool mix of old school and new school design.

I'm glad it has found success. It probably didn't cost much to make compared to SE's usual AAA fare so at 2 million is probably turned quite a profit.

I've played both already actually, I'm a fan of FF franchise, but thanks anyway!

Well deserved. It was a fantastic game with fun gameplay and an incredible soundtrack. Keen for the sequel.

Square only published not developed. Aquire made OT and Silicon Studio makes BD.

Bite my shiny metal cockpit!

Imagine if they did a FF6 Remake in Octopath's graphical style.
Holy moly, old school fans would go bananas.
I reckon a lot of OT's success can attributed to it tapping into the fanbase of the pre-Playstation Final Fantasy entries.
