Forums - Sony Discussion - Report: Sony looking to acquire Metal Gear, Castlevania, and Silent Hill IP's from Konami, Kojima involvement planned

what a potential big dick move.

Kojima makes Metal Gear HUGE and gets more eyes on Silent Hill than there has been in decades

Konami treats him like shit and he leaves the company.

Kojima gets snatched up by Sony

Konami continues to ruin their legacy with all the most disrespectful methods they can.

Kojima makes a critically hailed, GOTY contender (That nevertheless doesn't sell all that well)

Sony offers to buy the IPs that Kojima helped make famous (And Castlevania)

Kojima...hopefully brings Silent Hills to life and revitalizes MGS.

All is well. Except I doubt Snake and the Belmonts could be in the next smash, which would make me sad.

Hope it's true. And there would be no better home than with Sony/PS. I could see them striking a deal where Sony owns the rights to the IPs and can make whatever video games they wish with them, keeping most if not all of the profits from them. Konami, on the other hand, holds the rights to creating Pachinko machines based on those IPs and keeps most, if not all, the profits those bring in.

Would be megaton if true. Not sure why people are saying "don't touch [IP]" as if Konami is doing them any sort of justice these days - except the Castlevania Netflix series; don't touch that.

Buying out exclusives leaves a bad taste in peoples mouths..
If this is the case than Sony should just buy Komani, atleast than it leaves a valid reason to make the games exclusive.
Imagine if MS brought the Witcher IP? or Nintendo brought the GTA IP just to lock them away from others to buy.. anti-consumer at its finest.
Buy the damn companies or leave them be in my opinion.

Buying all of Konami would be foolish if all Sony wants are the IPs. Konami has largely shifted their focus away from AAA game development and publishing. What would Sony do with Konami's pachinko machine business or all their sport/fitness centers?

What will they do with all those Pachinko machines? They make money off them of course. Just because you buy out a studio doesnt mean everything stops and restarts. Pachinko machines are huge profit gains.

Trust me, if Sony buy out IPs from studios than expect their competitors to do the exact same. I wish a 3rd party buys out Dead Space from EA but i wouldnt want Sony, Xbox or Nintendo to do it because they will surely lock it away from others to play.

Say you have a car and a TV I would like to buy from you? Why the fuck should I buy your whole house just to get them when those are the only two things I care about?

Because by buying Castlevania, MGS and Silent Hills, you are basically clearing them out. Why would people want to support anti-consumer decisions like these?

This will breed other companies to do the same. Let's say if Google Stadia brought these IPs instead of Sony and they promised to make them big AAA budget titles, would you be happy about it?

I'm not a fan of 3rd party content going exclusive but at this point it doesn't seem like Konami is going to do anything with it and I believe Sony games will come to both PS and PC in the future so this is good news.

Just to be clear, I don't believe Sony has bought anything. At most, I think they're financing and developing new games that will most likely end up on PS and PC.

I doubt Konami is selling them. Konami likely would not sell IPs that make them money, from old game collections on multiple platforms to Pachinko. More like Sony is having a contract deal for a few exclusive games in each series developed by them or closely associated studios.

Bite my shiny metal cockpit!

I agree of course that it'd be better if a 3rd party publisher revived these games and made them multiplatform.

With that said, I'm not sure why you'd rather not ever see e.g. a new Dead Space game than to have Microsoft or Sony bring it to XB/PC or PS/PC, respectively. That doesn't make much sense to me other than fear of getting the short stick in a made up console war.

I doubt it. Konami would earn more by licensing them than by outright selling them. It's not like other studios wouldn't touch those series, the name alone would guarantee sales, especially if its development is not affected by Konami at all.

You know it deserves the GOTY.
