Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Teraflops are NOT a Measurement of Gaming Performance

Nope. MS announced 6 Tflops in July at E3 '16. It wasn't until September of that same year that Sony revealed the Pro's specs.

Ah, okay.

Either way TF was already being discussed in 2013, especially as we started seeing resolution disparities.

But it's relevant given the consoles with more TF have also had more power in practice. Consoles are essentially using the same tech.

Yes there were discussion in 2013.

Sony on reveal just showed PS4 specs. And when MS revealed X1 and it was much smaller they gone full defense mode and Major Nelson or Don Mattrick said in the news parts of Xbox that there were no way they would allow a 30% deficit against PS4 (after that we had that small bump on CPU clock), but yes they talked a lot about how they weren't weaker while Sony haven't even touted they had the stronger console.

both consoles using low end cpus of the ryzen range, low number cores and multi threading. Both pc and console snext gen wont be as much of a leap.

Huh?

They will be Ryzen 2, 8core.
Also their rumored to run like 3,2Ghz....

Thats not "low end"

Ryzen is currently beating Intel at Mhz vs Mhz right?
This means that if you take a equal cpu from intel, thats 8cores, and also clocked at 3,2ghz it would be slower.

Not everyone buys a Intel -K part, and overclocks to 5ghz.

This is "quite" a beefy CPU imo, esp compaired to the slow jaguar cores that were inside the current Playstation 4 / Xbox One X.

I think what the OP is trying to say in one sentence is

"Calm your titties console gamers, TFLOPs means nothing and PC master race still ahead with their GFORCE GPUs."

And that is true.

1) Yes Tflop can give an easy comparison if everything is the same and you just change Tflop, but for most cases it is basically meaningless.

2) Doesn't mater what PS5 or XSX delivers PC can have it higher (sure probably more expensive as well)

Well, duh. The actual measure of gaming performance is the little Nvidia symbol on your graphics card.

And I bet all of this will get ignored by many when comparing the switch 2 gpu to others (it's already getting ignored a lot).

You should have just said that.

It's evident there was a lot of discussion about Xbox being weaker and it was mostly discussed on the web.

But now that Xbox seemingly has more powerful devices, I'm glad we realized it doesn't really matter.

Pretty much.

I eluded to that toward the end with comparing the likely power to a current AMD GPU in the 5700XT.

But even then if it has a lower TDP which it will do, then it won't run as good as a desktop variant depending on how much lower that power rating is.

This is mainly for people saying "WEll tHAat's MoRe TeRaFLoPs ThAn a 2080"

Playstation 5 + Xbox Series X, are BOTH confirmed to be useing RDNA 2.

Its about 50% more effecient in terms of Performance/watt, than a RDNA1 card is, according to AMD.

This means, that even if Playstation 5, uses less power on the GPU than a current 5700XT card does, it could beat it in performance.

power consumption:

5700 XT   ~25% less power used than a 2080ti.

performance:

5700 XT  about ~ 17% slower than a Geforce 2080 ti.

(this is on pc side, with drivers, and games optimised for nvidia bullcrap ect... on consoles differnce would be even smaller)

Now imagine a +50% performance pr watt gain from RDNA1 -> RDNA 2.

Its totally possbily that if consoles are 12 Tflops as rumored, they could be around equal to a Geforce 2080 ti.

Would you like to dispute any of the arguements above, that says its possible to do so?
Playstation 5 + Xbox Series X are gonna be quite powerfull (imo).

17% Slower?

Your graph shows the highest end 5700 XT is 37% Slower than a 2080ti. And the base 5700 XT is 45% slower.

Imo the 2080ti is completely out of reach and if the new PS5/Xbox Series X can match it's performance I will request a permaban of my account fro a mod.

The new consoles have a chance of catching up to a 2070 super and Ryzen 7 3700x combination (although those 2 components combined cost £750, but I'll lower to £550 for bulk buying, cheaper mobile chip variants and removing the Nvidia Tax) And that's before any cooling, motherboard, controllers with a much higher  power budget.

But judging by the numbers you've shown, I will ask for a permaban if the new consoles match a 2080ti.

Edit: My Actual prediction is RTX 2060 super equivalent.

Edit,2: I forgot to include the expensive likely 1TB nvme SSD storage in my mockup price components.

Well...power wasn't what caused the xbox one to be mocked by all the internet though.

Tv, sports, 100$ price difference, kinect, always online and fee on used games did much more damage to the xbox brand. And then, of course, there was the power difference on top of all that.
