Forums - Nintendo Discussion - NPD: Percentages of US Switch owners that own PS4/Xbone/both/neither

This seems to me a pretty strong indication that Switch coexists rather than directly competes against PS4/Xbone.

No, it just means there is more sales potential for the switch.

Where does it say which is the primary console?

In the numbers.

Pyro as Bill said:

If you shuffle (randomise) a pack of playing cards, how many cards would you have to turn over before you could accurately predict that they're 50:50 red/black and 25:25:25:25 hearts, diamonds, spades and clubs?

If you shuffled a billion packs of playing cards, how many cards do you think you'd have to turn over before getting a 95%+ or 99%+ accurate result?

(a random sample of 1000 is enough to predict a population size in the tens or hundreds of millions)

You'd have to turn over 0. A pack of playing cards, regardless of how well you shuffle it, is always going to be 50/50 black and 1/4 each suit

Even if you didn't already know the result, there's still the possibility of an extreme result. You could theoretically look at 50% of the cards and find them all to be black, thus the logical (albeit incorrect) conclusion would be that all of the cards are black.

Do you know what the odds of that happening are?

Additionally a random sample that's legitimately representative of the general populace is a statistical improbability. Where exactly did they do the survey? If it was via the NPD site itself, or through a game store or something, then you'd expect the majority of respondents to be more hardcore gamers and thus you'd also expect them to be more likely to own multiple consoles than the average person.

It's very important that the sample is as representative as possible.

Oh and I'm not saying this statement should be dismissed either. I'm just asking for the source to clarify how accurate it's likely to be. If it's revealed that it was a survey of 12 people in one city then this information is basically worthless, while if it was a survey of 120,000 people spread out across the country then it's much more meaningful.

Overkill.

Don't Play Stationary 4 ever. Switch!

I did some math, and based on the figures we have now, here's what we have in absolute number terms, based on an install base of 17 million Switch owners in the U.S. as of the end of Dec. 2019:

Switch only: 5.1M
Switch+PS4: 5.27M
Switch+XBO: 3.91M
Switch+PS4+XBO: 2.89M

These numbers are not exact because the percentages were clearly rounded (hence the total of 101%), but it should be close enough.

With the PS4's U.S. install base being at about 32.27M as of Dec. 2019 and the XBO's being at 27.53M, these figures mean that about 25.3% of PS4 owners (8.16M) and 24.7% of XBO owners (6.8M) also own a Switch. It also means that, at minimum, about 9% of PS4 owners also also own an XBO (or, conversely, at least 10.5% of XBO owners also own a PS4). That number is almost certainly higher than that, considering there has to be people that own both a PS4 & XBO but not a Switch. Hopefully Piscatella responds to my tweet.

Nevermind.

Secondary console confirmed?

Even though I still believe in Nintendo's ability to compete against MS/Sony if they again decided to release a power focused console (their last was the gamecube). I think them co-existing in this form is far healthier for the industry and brings more diversity.

Though whether or not it is doesn't matter whatsoever, these statistics imply neither this or that. Those 31% that also own a PS4 could also still be using their Switches as their "primary" console for all we know.

We need PC percentage as well, how many Switch owner has PC, ( I am just saying before someone else said)

I'm sure most Switch uses have a computer.

Nice try. If switch is the common deniminator, it is a primary console. This comparison will be even clearer during the 10th gen, since the switch 2 is likely to release only 2 years after the ps5 and xsx instead of 3.

And people thought launching in the middle of the generation will negatively impact the Switch.
