Forums - Gaming Discussion - Do gamers really want Cloud gaming?

Handhelds haven't exactly been something new before the Switch came along. The difference is that handhelds are still dedicated systems designed to play games on. Cloud gaming like MS envisions, and them focusing on becoming the Netflix of gaming with Xcloud and GP, is more about bringing a controller along and play full blown next gen console games on a phone or stream on tv's. It is kinda cool but I just don't agree that it's really a future people want. Unless, of course, it really becomes a big improvement over traditional consoles and pc where we can tap into the power of a Nasa super computer without any issues like connectivity problems and lag.

MS: consoles aren't going anywhere for a decade+ minimum, streaming is merely a convenience and will always be inferior to local hardware

goopy: well clearly MS doesnt care about consoles and are going all in on Xcloud

MS: hey here's this fucking beast of a console, enjoy

goopy: well clearly MS is not interested in releasing dedicated systems designed to play games on

Of course MS has the Series X and it's a beastly console. I'm just saying that MS doesn't care if it will sell more boxes than Sony because they're already looking past next gen, where they see a future without the need for consoles/gaming pc's, just like we don't need Blu-ray or DVD players anymore. A future where MS becomes the Netflix of gaming with Xcloud and GP and you play their games whenever, and on whatever you want. For them, this gen will all be about winning subscribers, not selling Series X boxes.

They're even planning on selling the Series X through a subscription model (obviously bundled with GP) like we're seeing with mobiles. We will see, but I'm expecting it to be the most expensive console in history with a $699 price tag. I know that sounds insane but so did $1200 phones a couple of years ago. My theory is that they aren't sure how people will react to it and that's why they are saying all MS exclusives will be cross-gen for the coming years and on GP from day one. Because even if the Series X bombs, it will still be a win for them if they can build GP subscribers in the mean time. They're putting all their eggs in the Xcloud/GP basket and I'm just here checking to see if that's really something gamers want.

Nope.

Prior to buying a game, either because you’re undecided or whatever, imagine being able to sample the game via streaming instead of having to wait for the demo to finish downloading. Accessing the game instantly instead of having to schedule a game trial...

That’s one of the few ways I see myself using it and appreciating the convenience.

People want Cloud Strife. Not Cloud gaming. Okay that was an easy one.

MS knows it won’t sell more Series X then PS5. Everybody knows that. So they are hoping that offering choice in consoles and services with PC support to collectively bridge that brand gap. Why do you keep pretending the Series X is all by itself?

You REALLY seem to not like their marketing department ;)

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

Hard pass. It's a solution looking for a problem.

The transition from physical to digital is not the same as the transition to streaming is going to be. You'll see. It's a good thing it's just video games, and I can simply quit once the full brunt of corporate horror is thrust upon us.

Considering how many of these services either don't take off or fall flat on their face, I would say that is very likely.

Nobody wants anything new. It's the convenience of the new tech that ends gaining the public acceptance as the times passes and the new tech gets better.

Depends on the game. For a real world flight sim, yes. Always up to date, 2 petabytes of real world data to explore, see everyone else flying around or even all real world traffic included. (But no streaming plans yet for ms flight sim)

For VR, definitely not. Every bit of latency and stability counts. Neither for racing, the average latency might be ok in the future or even now but any little lag spike will screw you up.

Adventure / walking sims / puzzle games, Why not.

I like these two posts the best of what I’ve read in the forum.

In short, convenience/low pain is what makes things work. It’s why Netflix has been so successful, it’s why sales music CDs generally only go to hipsters and old people (mainly the really old baby boomers and the generation just above them that they don’t make music for anymore).

With streaming games, certain experiences won’t be ideal for it until the tech catches up, but like it did for music/film, it will for gaming.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

Still waiting to see how the XSX is not a traditional console. Please explain, should be an entertaining read.

I already told you. IT's not a traditional console in the sense that they're not pushing next gen tech and try get to people to migrate asap. Instead they're making all their exclusives cross-gen for 2 years, effectively creating less incentive to leap in the next gen until the big 3rd party titles come out a couple years later. They know this isn't a good way to sell a ton of Series X's and push next gen gaming forward. But they don't care because they're aiming to reach 8 billion non-gamers through Xcloud on a ton of different devices. They're basically saying we don't need next gen consoles or pc anymore when we got the Cloud.

Neither Google nor Amazon has publicly announced plans to launch a game console, but both are positioned to compete directly with Microsoft’s Xbox when it comes to what Spencer sees as the next great expansion in gaming.

“Amazon and Google are focusing on how to get gaming to 7 billion people around the world,” Spencer told Protocol. “Ultimately, that’s the goal.”

"Though game consoles like Xbox One and PlayStation 4 sell in the tens or, in the case of PS4, hundreds of millions, the real potential market for gaming, Spencer believes, is in the billions of people on Earth who don’t – or can’t – own a game console. "

So it is a traditional next generation console.

But its not a traditional marketing strategy.
