I wanna try too, I lived in Germany 1 year during a school exchange and I think I actually memorized the majority (but not every single) state.

1. Baden-Wuttenberg, Stuttgard

2. Bayern, München

3. Berlin

4. Bradenburg + ???

5. Bremen

6. Hamburg

7. Kassel?

8. Macklemburg-Vopormenn

9. Niedersachsen, Hannover

10. Nordheim-Westfalen, Bochum? Essen? Dortmund? Dusseldorf?

11. Rhineland

12. Saarlandes

13. Sachsen, Dresden

14. Sachsen-Anhalt

15. Don't remember the name exactly, I know it has Holstein or something and the capital is Kiel

16. Turingen

How did I do it?

You're correct on merkelberg, she comes from where. Anhaltspunkt would be more like it translated to clue. The real reason for 'Anhalt' is that it is the name of a noble family who were heading this part back in time. And congrats, you did pretty well, about half right. Bremen and Hamburg is everyone switching up all the time.

I never thought about all German "states" in general before, "all 3 Saxons are in diagonal line" seems easy to remember. The most embarassing geography ignorance I had, was for the longest time I believed Switzerland was 100% surrounded by high Alps mountains. Why not? Last edited by mutantsushi - on 07 February 2020

The rest of the world, to my knowledge, doesn't value statehood like we do in America. We are really 50 nations bonded together as one United grouping. That's how we started out as,how we were until civil war, and honestly how we still are.

Mexico has a copypaste of the American system. We even share essentially the same official name, United Mexican States. The country didn't start out like that but the characteristics of federalism have impregnated into all the states' culture over time. It seems that not too many foreign people know the states around here, not even one or two, but to us there are massive distinctions between, say, Baja California and Yucatán, or Veracruz and Jalisco. Massively different populations from a vast amount of angles, not just politically.

That was hilarious!

But... I don't think I would do any better...

As a Virginian I appreciate that he knows Bob Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads”.

I did say to my knowledge, meaning I wasn't 100% certain. I'm curious what specific powers the German states retain vs their federal Government? I honestly don't know.

Well, german states (Bundesland) aren't as independent as american states or Switzerlands cantons. They have no own taxes for instance, taxes are the same in the whole of germany. Many other stuff is central too.

That's just wrong.

See Art. 105 II GG and Art. 105 IIa GG
https://www.gesetze-im-internet.de/gg/art_105.html

For example Gewerbesteuer, Grundsteuer, Grunderwerbssteuer, Hundesteuer and Kirchensteuer (which is not a real tax) are different everywhere.

To be fair, if someone gave me a map of Berlin all I could do is randomly scribble the words Berlin, Frankfurt, Hamburg, and Auschwitz. And I'm only 100% sure one of those is actually a city.

which isn't even located in Germany.

1. Baden-Wuttenberg, Stuttgard -- correct

2. Bayern, München --correct

3. Berlin -- correct (as city state it's capital and the state is the same)

4. Bradenburg + ??? -- the capital is Potsdam, but the state is correct

5. Bremen -- correct, the second city state

6. Hamburg -- correct, and the third city state

7. Kassel? -- Hessen, Wiesbaden; Kassel is a city in Hessen though

8. Macklemburg-Vopormenn -- correct, capital is Schwerin

9. Niedersachsen, Hannover -- correct

10. Nordheim-Westfalen, Bochum? Essen? Dortmund? Dusseldorf? -- Düsseldorf

11. Rhineland -- Rheinland-Pfalz (or Rhineland-Palatine in english), correct, capital is Mainz

12. Saarlandes -- correct, capital is Saarbrücken

13. Sachsen, Dresden -- correct

14. Sachsen-Anhalt -- correct, Magdeburg

15. Don't remember the name exactly, I know it has Holstein or something and the capital is Kiel -- correct, full name is Schleswig-Holstein

16. Turingen -- correct, capital Erfurt

How did I do it? -- very well

Well, here is the solution:

3DS-FC: 4511-1768-7903 (Mii-Name: Mnementh), Nintendo-Network-ID: Mnementh, Switch: SW-7706-3819-9381 (Mnementh)

my greatest games: 2017, 2018, 2019

Predictions: Switch / Switch vs. XB1 in the US / Three Houses first quarter

I know the 10 Bundesländer of Austria, that's good enough for me. And no, I didn't have to look up a map to count how many Bundesländer Austria has.

EDIT:

Give it a shot if you want. The table has all answers in it, so you can guess your way to victory even if you don't know anything. Bonus points if you know what the piece without a number is.

Bundesland Capital
Vienna Bregenz
Burgenland Innsbruck
Lower Austria Salzburg
Upper Austria Klagenfurt
Styria Graz
Carinthia Linz
Salzburg St. Pölten
Tyrol Eisenstadt
Vorarlberg Vienna

Legend11 correctly predicted that GTA IV (360+PS3) would outsell SSBB. I was wrong.

I don't trust that table. Why is Vienna not in Vienna? Why is Salzburg not in Salzburg? That doesn't make any sense.

So I'm just going to do the map with what I feel like fits the most:

1. Tyrol

2. Tyrol

3. Tyrol

4. Tyrol

5. Tyrol

6. Tyrol

7. Tyrol?

8. Tyrol

9. Vienna
