F.e. every state has their own school system. The federal government or the German parliament can't make decisions in that area.
Federal laws of the German parliament "Bundestag" have to be approved by the "Bundesrat", which is similar to the US senate.

I really wasn't trying to trigger anyone, sorry. I'd have said conservative mega cities as well, but there aren't any. Liberals tend to live in major cities and conservatives tend to be spread out in the countryside.
Anyway, I was just trying to prove why states in the US are so important and powerful in comparison to at least most of the rest of the world's federal systems. We could never have something like the recent election in UK happen because the Senate will probably always be balanced out with moderate swing votes or slightly leaning right due to the way it's all set up. I'm rather thankful we don't just have the House of Representatives as then a national election could bring in sweeping changes that hurt the Midwest (my home) simply based on what big city folks want.

You're correct on merkelberg, she comes from where. Anhaltspunkt would be more like it translated to clue. The real reason for 'Anhalt' is that it is the name of a noble family who were heading this part back in time. Here is one of them:
And congrats, you did pretty well, about half right. Bremen and Hamburg is everyone switching up all the time.

Well, german states (Bundesland) aren't as independent as american states or Switzerlands cantons. They have no own taxes for instance, taxes are the same in the whole of germany. Many other stuff is central too.

Not all taxes are the same in every German state. The Bavarian and Saxon real estate tax f.e. is much lower than in most other states.

Mexico has a copypaste of the American system. We even share essentially the same official name, United Mexican States. The country didn't start out like that but the characteristics of federalism have impregnated into all the states' culture over time. It seems that not too many foreign people know the states around here, not even one or two, but to us there are massive distinctions between, say, Baja California and Yucatán, or Veracruz and Jalisco. Massively different populations from a vast amount of angles, not just politically.
My bet with The_Liquid_Laser: I think the Switch won't surpass the PS2 as the best selling system of all time. If it does, I'll play a game of a list that The_Liquid_Laser will provide, I will have to play it for 50 hours or complete it, whatever comes first.
