Forums - General Discussion - Local German(on twitter) gets bored and tries to name all American states.

F.e. every state has their own school system. The federal government or the German parliament can't make decisions in that area.

Federal laws of the German parliament "Bundestag" have to be approved by the "Bundesrat", which is similar to the US senate.

The rest of the world, to my knowledge, doesn't value statehood like we do in America. We are really 50 nations bonded together as one United grouping. That's how we started out as,how we were until civil war, and honestly how we still are.

We are bound to the Constitution which requires supermajority of states voting to change. States still have national guards and militias. The concept of the Senate is founded on the idea that states will perpetually have significant weight in government. Otherwise San Francisco, New York City, and Chicago would shove their liberal views down the throats of rural America with no concern for the values of the people there. Even becoming a state is extremely difficult because of how valued it is.

This isn't a politics thread guys, let's leave the political stuff like the bolded at the door.

I really wasn't trying to trigger anyone, sorry. I'd have said conservative mega cities as well, but there aren't any. Liberals tend to live in major cities and conservatives tend to be spread out in the countryside.

Anyway, I was just trying to prove why states in the US are so important and powerful in comparison to at least most of the rest of the world's federal systems. We could never have something like the recent election in UK happen because the Senate will probably always be balanced out with moderate swing votes or slightly leaning right due to the way it's all set up. I'm rather thankful we don't just have the House of Representatives as then a national election could bring in sweeping changes that hurt the Midwest (my home) simply based on what big city folks want.

That's interesting, thanks for sharing!

OK, here is my original guesses:

1 Baden-Wurtenburg 2 Bavaria 3 Berlin 4 Brandenburg 5 Hamburg 6 Bremen 7 HESSE? 8 Palatinate something? 9 North Rheinland Westfalia? 10 Cologne! 11 Frankfurt? 12 Saarland 13 Leipzig! 14 THURINGIA? 15 Schleswig-Holstein (they KNOW their cows) - ALMOST forgot that when I wrote others first 16 The famousest part of Germany

So, how did I do...?

1 CORRECT! 2 CORRECT! 3 CORRECT! 4 CORRECT! 5 Hamburg (swapped with Bremen, which I suspected) 6 Bremen (swapped with Hamburg, which I suspected) 7 CORRECT! (but misplaced it's capital) 8 Mecklenberg-Vorpommern (Merkelberg would be easier to remember, I think she's from there) 9 Lower Saxony (I think NRW made me think "NW") 10 North Rheinland Westphalia (swapped with Lower Saxony, largest city correct) 11 Rheinland-Palatinate (THERE'S the Palatinate! Frankfurt isn't in it, but is closest big city so 1/4 points?) 12 CORRECT! 13 Saxony (largest city correct) 14 Saxony-Anhalt (...now I Google what Anhalt means, "clue" WTF?) 15 CORRECT! 16 Thuringia (swapped with Saxony-Anhalt)

...so 7/16, or 9/16 if knowing biggest city counts. not bad for a gringo who doesn't speak german and hasn't even been to germany or europe. I knew that trying to guess without list of state names would make it harder, probably would have gotten several more with that... Still I feel lucky with Hesse, like I knew it was the name of a state, and the location felt reasonable, but wasn't really sure. (although if I had associated Frankfurt with Hesse, I probably would have screwed it up and switched them, but a win is a win...)

You're correct on merkelberg, she comes from where. Anhaltspunkt would be more like it translated to clue. The real reason for 'Anhalt' is that it is the name of a noble family who were heading this part back in time. Here is one of them:

And congrats, you did pretty well, about half right. Bremen and Hamburg is everyone switching up all the time.

You are wrong. Germany is also a federalistic state.

I did say to my knowledge, meaning I wasn't 100% certain. I'm curious what specific powers the German states retain vs their federal Government? I honestly don't know.

Well, german states (Bundesland) aren't as independent as american states or Switzerlands cantons. They have no own taxes for instance, taxes are the same in the whole of germany. Many other stuff is central too.

Not all taxes are the same in every German state. The Bavarian and Saxon real estate tax f.e. is much lower than in most other states.

I wanna try too, I lived in Germany 1 year during a school exchange and I think I actually memorized the majority (but not every single) state.

1. Baden-Wuttenberg, Stuttgard

2. Bayern, München

3. Berlin

4. Bradenburg + ???

5. Bremen

6. Hamburg

7. Kassel?

8. Macklemburg-Vopormenn

9. Niedersachsen, Hannover

10. Nordheim-Westfalen, Bochum? Essen? Dortmund? Dusseldorf?

11. Rhineland

12. Saarlandes

13. Sachsen, Dresden

14. Sachsen-Anhalt

15. Don't remember the name exactly, I know it has Holstein or something and the capital is Kiel

16. Turingen

How did I do it?

I never thought about all German "states" in general before, "all 3 Saxons are in diagonal line" seems easy to remember. The most embarassing geography ignorance I had, was for the longest time I believed Switzerland was 100% surrounded by high Alps mountains. Why not? Last edited by mutantsushi - on 07 February 2020

Mexico has a copypaste of the American system. We even share essentially the same official name, United Mexican States. The country didn't start out like that but the characteristics of federalism have impregnated into all the states' culture over time. It seems that not too many foreign people know the states around here, not even one or two, but to us there are massive distinctions between, say, Baja California and Yucatán, or Veracruz and Jalisco. Massively different populations from a vast amount of angles, not just politically.

My bet with The_Liquid_Laser: I think the Switch won't surpass the PS2 as the best selling system of all time. If it does, I'll play a game of a list that The_Liquid_Laser will provide, I will have to play it for 50 hours or complete it, whatever comes first.

That was hilarious!

But... I don't think I would do any better...
