I still think MS has positioned themselves to have better first party output than Sony next gen. But I'm fully prepared to be wrong if those games are bad.

That's a bold statement when we have yet to see anything from their new studios, versus Sony who has a proven track record and hot sequels in the pipeline.

But we shall see, it will be more interesting than in a long time for sure.

Like I said, I'm prepared to be wrong. Either way they will have a lot more than they did this gen in exclusives to Xbox and PC. It is to be determined whether those are mostly AAA quality games or not.

Look at 2020:

Battletoads
Cuphead
Ori and the Will of the wisps
Halo Infinate

Its not horrible.... but its not exactly great either.
Thats like 1 indie / budget sized game, 2 AA titles, and 1 AAA one.

Theres nothing "new" with those games either,
apart from a return of battletoads (which alot of people dont even want, in its current state).

Sony is gonna go out on a high note, and with backwards compatabilty being a thing for all PS4 games, on PS5...
It should act like a strong pushing force for the PS5.

If "Halo - Infinate" is considered a next gen game but is cross gen for xbox,
I'd argue the same could be true for Last of Us - Part 2, ect.

Maybe they look and play better on PS5, thus being equal to say a new Halo game in terms of sales effects.

The first few months of a gen is not what I was talking about. Most of the studios MS bought won't have games ready right away to release as exclusives. I think in 2 years time they will be releasing more rapidly exclusives than Sony.

By the way, I say all this as a Nintendo fan.

The author doesn't provide sufficient evidence to justify the use of the word "crush".

Considering the facts that XB is putting their games on any hardware they can, while PS is not, and that PS currently has a much larger share of the console market, it logically follows that PS is more likely to sell more units in the next generation. So, that premise makes sense. If I was betting at even money, I'd certainly bet on Sony.

I expect Gamepass to help MS is many ways though. It limits the number of people that will jump ship (who's leaving if you already have months or years of Gamepass ahead of you). It also provides a lot of value to new players on XB. There are tons of XB1 games (maybe some will be enhanced for next gen, which would help even more) that immediately fill out a new XB gamer's library for just $10-$15 per month. That's very helpful at the start of a generation, when one has to come up with hundreds of dollars just for hardware.

Anyway, I think I agree with the general sentiment here - PS will very likely outsell XB next gen. But, XB will almost certainly perform better than they did in the current gen.

Main reason would be look at historic and Playstation always managing to win against Xbox.

How so? I think MS has definitely taken the necessary steps to increase their output both quantitatively and qualitatively, but so have Sony.

Someone (with time) should count how many studios they each started this gen with and how many they have now. I think MS has purchased a lot more.

Yes they bought a lot more, but none of them really put up a fight against the studios Sony already had. And insomniac alone is more relevant than almost the sum of what MS bought.

Papa Phil when he reads that Sony may sell more consoles:

Well, now those studios have a lot more money they can tap into to make their dream games. I can't imagine Phil did this only to tell them they have to stay conservative. Here's hoping those studios shine like they never have before.

I just wish, through some oddball loophole in the contract, Obsidian has the rights to KOTOR 2 and completely remakes it if these rumors of Disney making a new KOTOR game are false. I need SOMETHING KOTOR related lol.

First of all the Xbox is almost tied with the PS4 in North America. The Xbox One was no flop, it will outsell the NES, 3DS, SNES, and n64 in North America. Remember how many people bought the NES which was much more popular than the SNES? I see more Xbox One's in North America than there were NES. The problem for Microsoft is they are a bit regional, with PS4 dominating in Europe, and the Switch in Japan (and btw the PS4 is the worse selling Sony home console in Japan ever, hardly a success in their home country, if Nintendo releases a Switch Pro I think the PS5 will die in Japan, and that is why Japanese games are being released for PC now.)

Launch aligned PS4 is tracking nearly half a million ahead of the PS3 in Japan. It will surpass it.

Sony also has middle East and Asian areas on lock down, something MS will struggle with.

Sure, they have. Granted Sony started up 2 new studios (with a potential 3rd coming next gen), their existing studios have grown, and they have Insomniac now.

MS purchasing more only puts their studio output to the number Sony has.

Money doesn't solve these type of problems. The studios already had their knowledge and capability and just throwing money at it won't improve that fast. Sure those studios can grow, mature, etc. But money on a studio EA, Ubisoft and other big publishers have a lot of money and studios still their games don't have the level of quality Sony have been putting.

MS also have the objective of 3-4 games a year so they will have some limit on the scope of the games and they calling those games AAA don't really mean they will be as grand as what Sony is already outputting. Even more because their objective is keep Gamepass feed and it is acceptable to have A, AA and AAA games coming instead of only AAA even more when 3rd parties also put games there.

As a Nintendo fan I find strange that you want the game close to Xbox.

As an Xbox player, I think Sony will have the next generation advantage, but MS will be in a more competitive position and with an expansion of services on several platforms.
Also this 2020 comes very well with games for Xbox One.
-Ori and the will of the wisps
-Bleeding Edge
-Cuphead DLC
-Gears Tactics
-Wasteland 3
-Tell me why
-Crossfire X
-Battletoads
-Grounded
-MS Flight simulator (Not sure about this game in xbox one)
-Halo Infinite
Good quantity of games and great variety.
My most wanted game anyway is Phantasy Star Online 2 (Old game i know) and try the Yakuza series in gamepass.
