Forums - PC Discussion - Question about Windows license key

I'm preparing to do a clean install of Windows on my PC. But I'm wondering how the license key registers and un-registers. Does it only do that when you're connected to the internet?

I'm asking because I don't want to be in a situation where I install Windows again and use the same license key, but get a message saying "This license key is already in use".

Around the Network

If it's Windows 10 and you bought it from an OEM (Dell, HP, etc...) the key is burned into the motherboard.

It should be stuck to your computer, if you don't swap out any hardware during the re-install, it should recognize your key automatically.
Am I glad I don't have to deal with Windows keys anymore though.

It's tied to your account.

I have mine tied to my Windows account, rather than the system itself.
