Honestly Im very surprised MS didn't launch the next gen a year before like with 360. Surely they must know Xbox One cant be rejuvenated so why drag it out? Its in Sonys interest to keep the PS4 going, at least MS is gearing up for a great year and starting next gen on a proper note.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

Multiple reasons:

1) Releasing a year earlier than ps5 gives Sony time to beef up their device to be stronger. Then Xbox is the weaker of the HD twins for 5/6s of a generation.

2) MS bought a bunch of studios that were all wrapping up their third party games. Having an additional year to work on exclusives (for Xbox and PC) to coincide with Xbox launch will boost hardware sales out the gate.

3) They know no one was going to beat Nintendo in the 2nd half of 2019 and first half of 2020. Mainline Pokemon and Animal Crossing baby!

In the end I think MS knows if they start the gen weak it will end up like this gen again so they want to come out swinging with exclusives and they will be able to more readily do that with the extra year.

Wow switch is a beast...I wonder how much of the sales comes from the handheld only version.
Still waiting for them to release a "pro" version to buy mine.

I'm calling it now the Switch will sell over 100m!

Well, only one from Nintendo yet.

Braverly Default II, No More Heroes III, Rune Factory 5 are some of the bigger games announced to release in 2020 so far, all exclusive to the Switch.

Those mid-tier releases are nice to have, but I was talking about big, system selling titles.

If a system gets enough mid-tier games, then they become system sellers themselves.  The PS1 only had one "big" franchise, Final Fantasy, and it didn't sell anything like the big franchises of today.  Instead the PS1 mostly sold on the strength of having a lot of great mid-tier games.  It became the top selling system of all time beating the previous record holder by about 40 million hardware units.  That is what having a lot of quality mid-tier games can do.

PS1 did not have only one big franchise. And Switch's third party support isn't anywhere near strong enough to negate the need for big first party exclusives.

Forgot about Gran Turismo.  Everything else sold under 10m, which would not be considered "big" by today's standards.  However PS1 hardware numbers are considered big by today's standards.  PS1 didn't sell on the power of a few huge hits.  It sold by having a huge library of games.  Don't count out the power of those mid-tier games.

I'm not saying that Switch doesn't need first party games.  It does, and it will have them.  I'm just saying don't discount the power of those mid-tier third party games.  They sell systems all on their own if there are enough of them.  When a big game releases there is a huge, immediate sales spike, but if you step back and look at the big picture, you'll see having a huge library of mid-tier games is important to selling a system.  People don't want to just play a few big titles a year with nothing in between.  Those mid-tier games can be system sellers too if there are enough of them.

Again, I was referring to those big games we both agree are necessary. No More Heroes 3 and the like don't qualify.

In Japan the ratio is roughly 2:1 in favor of the hybrid console. That would mean 100k Switch Lite sold worldwide this week if the ratio is similar everywhere.

I'm surprised the Switch Lite isn't a bigger percentage of Switch with how much cheaper it is. Especially in Japan with their love of handhelds.

I think that the model without dock available in Japan is the cause
