Tuesday is the Switch's 3rd birthday. I suppose it makes some sense if they ran a Direct for that day. So, I suppose tomorrow is

FYI, we are now 19 days from Nintendo zero games on their release schedule with a definite date.

In 19 days, that sounds like a perfect day for a Direct

You say tomato, I say tomato

"¡Viva la Ñ!"

I feel like the only one in this forum who couldn't give a crap about a general direct.

I've always felt that Treehouse segments and in depth focuses on games, like the last Animal Crossing Direct are infinitely more rewarding. Otherwise, I think a single annual direct, showcasing key software for the next 1-2 years is really all that's needed; and it feels much more special when it's infrequent. Having them 6-12 times a year like they did before was major overkill. People keep saying they want them all the time, but when they were happening all the time, it was constant "that sucked" "that was disappointing" responses. Nintendo at its best is giving an in depth look at their key software and just keep the constant stream of info on new games with their youtube and Nintendo News Switch channel. Their marketing and messaging will be a lot better as a result of keeping the "look at this list of games coming up in the future" to a minimum.

I think 3-4 Nindies per year will work well. Generally those smaller games work on a single hook, and don't need the in depth looks.

As I've said in other threads, Nintendo has been phasing out the general directs in favour of Nindies, focused directs, their youtube channel, and their Switch news channel. It won't get phased out completely, as they'll still have the summer show, and probably a Spaceworld slot show.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

I do not watch treehouse or segments focused on one game. To me they are a pure bore-fest.
Short presentation of a lot of different games to know what is coming is what I want. Since games get delayed all the time I rather have a few such presentations per year with what I can look forward to in the upcoming months. Presenting near finished games rather than "Look at what you might be playing 2 years from now, oh no wait 3 years, 4... canceled."

I prefer quick burst reveals and trailers. I'm really not a fan of spoilers in video games or movies (even color pallete revelations bother me as I really want to be surprised as the game or movie progresses), so while I appreciate what a Treehouse event can do to get people unfamiliar with the title excited, usually all I need to know is the hook and get a general gist of the graphical fidelity or tone of the game to get hyped.

Just to keep in mind, they usually announce their General Directs about 24-48 hrs before they go live.
Usually, the direct goes live on a Wednesday or a Thursday because Friday is when the market closes and the news cycle sorta slows down until the new week.
Fridays, I guess in a business sense, are used for announcing bad news (i.e., Metroid Prime 4 restarting development) so the news cycle is relatively short instead of having the news linger for most of the week.

So, this is by far the longest period without a general Nintendo direct. I couldn't imagine that I would feel this abstention so hard 😫

We reap what we sow

I think coronavirus has thrown off their planned early-year direct. Their production lines are shut down and it doesn't really make sense to hype people up for Switch when it's impossible to buy one (literally impossible here in Japan; going to be progressively more difficult in the West in the next few weeks). I want one ASAP, but I wouldn't be surprised if we get into April without one tbh

Even if they did take your advise, they'd still be due to have that single annual Direct now.  Outside of Animal Crossing, we literally don't have anything to look forward to from Nintendo this year except a vague TBA 2020 for the Xenoblade remake.

It's not a matter of like last year when we were eagerly awaiting a January Direct when we already knew about Luigi's Mansion, Animal Crossing, Pokemon, Fire Emblem, Yoshi, Marvel Ultimate Alliance, Daemon ex Machina, and whatever else I'm forgetting in the middle of the night.  Last year with that lineup already baked in, you would have had a point.  We didn't need a Direct.

But this year is different.  Nintendo went in the complete opposite direction last year and focused almost completely on their lineup for that year.  Even going so far as skipping the Game Awards.  That's fine as far as it goes, but now they need to communicate with the world why anyone should buy a Switch.

Bravely Default 2 and No More Heroes 3 were announced at the Game Awards. Third party but Switch exclusive like Ultimate Alliance and Daemon ex Machina which you counted. Even still, that's only 3 games past March that don't even have dates so I totally agree with your post otherwise. I fear the lack of a direct is because they lack games. Can't have a direct if nothing is releasing from April to July.
