Paper Mario, I can see coming. I was expecting something like that this year anyway. I mean, it's one of the Nintendo IP that aren't on the Switch yet.

A 2D Metroid however seems weird, especially in light of Metroid Prime 4 coming at a later date. I simply don't expect Nintendo to develop 2 Metroid games side by side, especially not in a way that both would have released about the same time if MP4 wouldn't have been scrapped and restarted along the way.

But that's what they did with prime and fusion.

But those came for different Platforms. Prime was for the Gamecube, Fusion for the GBA. Here, both would come for the same platform and would have eaten each other's sales if they released like that.

You seriously think Gamecube owners and GBA owners were such a different audience that the people buying Fusion and Prime were all that different? There was a promotion for people who bought both to be able to play the original Metroid for free and get the Fusion suit in Prime if you linked them. They went on to become two of the best selling in the series, with Prime being the best, and Fusion being the best selling portable title after the Game Boy one. They're the only two Metroid titles released after Super Metroid to outsell it. Nintendo doesn't even have two consoles to release two separate Metroid games on anymore. They sold well despite being released at the same time not because they were on different systems selling to different audiences, but because they both sold to the same hardcore Nintendo and Metroid fans that had both systems, but gave those fans two very different experiences. Why would someone not buy Prime or Fusion just because they'd bought the other? They're different experiences, if you only bought one, it was because you only liked one of the experiences on offer, not because you only had one console. Or do you think Prime, the better selling game on Gamecube, attracted that many more people from its audience that was quarter the size of Fusion's on GBA, which sold over a million less? Why on earth would Metroid fans be less likely to buy both titles if they were on the same system than if they were on different ones? Being on the same system means you only have to buy one system, which makes it much damn easier to keep up with a series. Trust me, I'm a Kingdom Hearts fan.

Also, keep in mind that this could be a port of Samus Returns from the 3DS, or a remake of Super Metroid in the same style, both of which could be done in pretty short development times, enough that they could have been started after the decision to scrap and restart Prime 4 was already made.

A new 2D Metroid would be cool. Though there are so many games in that genre these days, plus the fact that Metroid is a relatively low selling franchise for Nintendo, so that's probably not huge news sales-wise. Would love indie pricing on a 2D Metroid but of course it'll be $60 and stay that way for years, so I would probably not bother and just go with MP4 later on.

Paper Mario I could care less about. That's probably Nintendo's worst series. The games feel like they are designed for 4 year olds. How they managed to butcher RPG Mario games after Square made the stellar Super Mario RPG is a travesty.

I may or may not be excited, but I am certainly not "excite", whatever that means.

I'm 28 and Paper Mario is my favorite series ever. It's hilarious, creative, and fun.

No, but having both on the same platform would still be more damageable than putting them on two separate platforms.

That seems more plausible to me than having created one from scratch. So yeah, might be more realistic than I originally thought it would be.

There are too many games I want for the Switch and we haven't even gotten the Direct yet. My Switch collection is swiftly outpacing my other libraries...

Why not? Maybe the original plan was to have 2D Metroid in 2020 and Prime 4 in 2021. Is that such a stretch for the company that released NSMBUD and  Mario Maker 2 five months apart, or Twilight Princess HD a year before BOTW, or Link's Awakening in 2019 and possibly BOTW2 in 2020?

Yeah, I don't think the two are really even in direct competition with each other. I love both, but I don't really think of the Prime and 2D Metroid series as the same thing.

Do you think there's any chance we get both Prime Trilogy HD and 2.5D Metroid in 2020?

It is certainly possible. A lot of rumors say Prime Trilogy HD has been finished for a while and they're sitting on it.

Personally I'm only interested in a new 2.5D Metroid as I already own the Prime Trilogy on Wii and Super on SNES.
