Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Alienware, promoting their Switch clone, tweets, "Switch is cool but... the limited number of games on it isn't"

A GPD Win 2 with 8 GB RAM and 1280x720p display still costs €740 + shipping + import taxes:

https://www.dragonbox.de/de/handhelds/handhelds-mit-windows/gpd-win-2-windows-10-intel-core-m3-8100y-256gb

A Smach Z with 8 GB RAM will cost €899 + shipping + import taxes... if it ever launches:

https://www.smachz.com/shop/

And please don't fall in the trap buying the cheaper 4 GB Smach Z for €699, if you want to play f.e. The Witcher 3, Doom or Wolfenstein 2 in better settings than on a cheap Switch or Switch Lite. 4 GB doesn't cut it for PC games anymore!

By the way, the Smach Z prototype "The Phawx" tested last year on YouTube had 32 GB RAM, so we don't even know, if even 8 GB RAM will be enough: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3QclbkG1WnQ&list=PLdC3pP79J-A-XUcDBq_Xv9G26WIQeRooK

The UFO concept looks more advanced than the GPD Win 2 and the Smach Z, also Alienware branded hardware ain't cheap... so I expect at least a price of $/€999.

And for €700 - €800 price difference to the Switch / Switch lite I can buy a lot of Switch games. The non-exclusives on Switch also aren't that expensive and fall faster in price than Nintendo's first-party-games. And if you wait for good offers several times per year, you also get Switch games for a decent price (pay 2 get 3; 3 Switch games for € xx, 5 Switch games for € xx...)

Last April I bought Diablo 3, Xenoblade 2, Let's Go, Ebola!, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker and Lego City Undercover for a total of €100... so only €20 per game.

Hahahahaha! You beat me to it.

Pretty sure Nintendo patented their Joycons, and dock. This is too much of a rip off to not get sued.

Also, this thing will cost $800 or more. Nobody is going to spend that much on a portable PC. The Smach Z can run Witcher 3 at 40 FPS 720p, and costs $664 dollars.
Concept UFO is likely even beefier than that, so it'll cost even more. That's why I'm saying Concept will cost $800 or more. Than you have to add storage to it since it has no physical media. PC games take up a ton of HDD space. Switch's use of carts and compression is a lifesaver when it comes to a storage solution. Anyway add another $100 to the price tag unless you want to constantly download and delete games from your full HDD.

Patents don't stop you from doing the same thing if your execution, design or both varies.

Not sure why they would bring up price when this will most likely be ~$300, maybe more. Of course, there is also the $200 Lite available.

300? Try 600, it's Alienware after all.

I think you forgot one zero in there somewhere.

If it's cheap enough, has decent power, and access to certain games that my Switch doesn't have, I may buy one. I don't mind competition.

The problem I have with this is the same reason I can't bring myself to get a laptop. It'll be 4 times the price of a desktop with similar power. I guess If I had tons of money I'd get one, but I don't. xD

But considering you own 5 bloomin' Xbox One's for some reason I guess money isn't a problem for you.

Quality>quantity

Hypothetically, if it can run all the current 8th gen era Windows games. RDR2 probably being most demanding. It would have more quality and quantity than Switch.

However, Nintendo Switch is now a $199 device with popular Nintendo games. Alienware's device would be for a core market and is likely too expensive for the mass market.

I would love to see various devices like this intended for PC games though.

Heh, I have five Xbox One units. But I usually buy hardware during a sale.

First I had two Xbox One fats I kept in separate rooms. One was a launch unit given to me as a gift, I eventually bought a second for a different room.

When the X1S first hit $199 I bought one of those. Then I eventually bought two X1X units at about $299 each to replace the two consoles I was actively using. Out of pocket, I may have spent over $1100 on X1 hardware. I also own two PS4's which I bought for about $199 each. Gaming is one of my favorite hobbies and I'd guess I've spent about $4000 over 6 years (hardware, software and subscriptions).

Price isn't really an argument when comparing consoles and PCs. I don't mind spending 2.000 € on decent hardware. I would gladly pay such an amount for a handheld-sized PC with nice specs. Sadly, this thing doesn't have an discrete GPU, so it's most likely not for me. But such a device with a GTX 1660 Ti? Hell yeah, I'd be totally down for that and wouldn't even care how much it costs.

It's also Not a question of this or that. You can just have both a switch and a portable PC. What I'm trying to say is that I really like the idea behind all this. Sure, the Marketing is crap, but come on, a gaming PC that (kinda) fits in your Pocket? Every gamer should ne excited for something like that!

Official member of VGC's Nintendo family, approved by the one and only RolStoppable. I feel honored.

Patents don't stop you from doing the same thing if your execution, design or both varies.

The core execution and design of the not-joy-cons is virtually identical to actual joy-cons. I'm sure Dell is using a slightly different analog stick, button placement, etc, but at it's core it's the same design. Had Dell not included Joy-Con-Like controllers, and just done something more akin to the Smach Z where the controller isn't removable they'd be in the clear.
